Saudi Arabia yesterday proposed a new peace initiative seeking to end the war in Yemen.

The initiative that involves a nationwide ceasefire and the reopening of air and sea links was announced by Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud during a press conference.

According to the Saudi Minister, political negotiations between the Saudi-backed government and the Houthis would begin again depending on the acceptance from the Yemeni sides.

Following the Saudi announcement, Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) issued a statement highlighting the country’s welcoming stance toward efforts to stop the war in Yemen and to put an end to the suffering of the Yemeni people.

The Ministry stressed that Qatar hopes for the comprehensive political track and the national reconciliation to be the way to convene all parties involved in the Yemeni scene as well as the international community to achieve security, stability and prosperity for the Yemeni people.

MOFA underlined Qatar's position calling for resolving the Yemeni crisis on the basis of the Gulf initiative and the relevant Security Council resolutions, specifically Resolution No. 2216.
