Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) ran a number of amenity projects in as many as 70 countries around the world last year, it was announced during the launch event of the institute’s 2018 Annual Report.

The projects extended support for educational, healthcare and infrastructure development, among others, in these countries.

QFFD spent $585 million for these projects, of which $451.8 million was dedicated to Arab countries, according to its annual report for 2018.

QFFD is a public development institution, committed, on behalf of the State of Qatar, to implement external aid projects under Law No. 19 of 2022 and its amendments. It has provided aid to numerous countries across the globe to achieve international cooperation goals in line with the Qatar National Vision 2030.

The priority areas of QFFD are education, healthcare, humanitarian relief, infrastructure development, and economic empowerment.

Director General of QFFD, Khalifa bin Jassim Al Kuwari, said at the event, “Qatar Fund for Development provided financial aid and effectively responded to humanitarian and development assistance in many countries. From 2015 until May 2019, the total aid amounted to QAR 8.15 billion, that equates to US$ 2.24 billion, an annual growth rate of 19 percent.”

Further shedding light on QFFD’s aid efforts, Al Kuwari added, “Whether through targeting access to healthcare services for underprivileged and deprived communities, providing for educational facilities and resources for out-of-school children, or building necessary infrastructure such as roads, water and sanitation networks, QFFD projects have helped millions of people around the world overcome basic barriers to human needs.”

Qatar donated $52 million to Syria and its neighboring countries, providing comprehensive healthcare, housing, and vocational training. These supported internally displaced Syrians and refugees in host countries: Jordan, Lebanon, and Turkey.

QFFD contributed a total of $3.5 million to various projects for Rohingya people in partnership with the UNHCR and local NGOs to provide life-saving healthcare and shelter in Myanmar and Bangladesh.

In Libya, over 600,000 people benefited from QFFD projects of $8 million. The projects were aimed at supporting the health sector through training of staff, the supply of equipment and medicines, among others.

In Yemen, Qatar continued to extend generous support by providing access to water and rehabilitating displaced persons.

QFFD also contributed $5 million to support UNICEF in fighting the cholera epidemic in the most affected areas in Yemen.

QFFD remains a major contributor to supporting the people of Palestine with contributions nearing $150 million.

In Sudan, QFFD contributed almost $112 million in 2018. With the completion of the 220 KV River Nile State Transmission Line Project, $85mn was disbursed to fund the project.

QFFD also supported various projects around the world such as the earthquake relief in Papua New Guinea, the provision of food relief for displaced persons in Iraq, in addition to several development projects in Chile, the Gambia, Kazakhstan, and the United States.
