1. The Square Business Lunch - InterContinental Doha The City

I love business lunches because they allow you to feel that you are off from work during weekdays (even if it is only for one hour). In addition, you can enjoy a fantastic three-course meal in a five-star hotel for a very decent price. If you are into these kind of experiences, I recommend trying the business lunch at The Square restaurant located inside the cosmopolitan InterContinental Doha The City.

At The Square, the food is very good and varied. You can enjoy many different international cuisines. For business lunches, you have a couple of options. As the first option, you can have a very quick meal comprising of a salad and dessert buffet, water and one soft beverage for QR 59. The second option includes a salad and dessert buffet, a la carte main course, water and one soft beverage.

The restaurant is one of the biggest in the city and the atmosphere won't disappoint you and nor will the service. It is the perfect set-up for a comfortable and exclusive lunch break.

Location: InterContinental Doha The City
Timings: From Sundays to Thursdays, 12:00 noon till 3:00 p.m.

2. Narcos (Netflix)

If you're wondering why I've got puffy eyes on a Sunday, it's only because I have been binge watching Narcos on Netflix over the weekend and barely got any sleep. Narcos chronicles the life of drug kingpin Pablo Escobar and his ruthless Medellín Cartel — and I'm sorry to say — the show is addictive.

I have watched movies on Pablo Escobar before, but with the time constraints of the silver screen, you do not get much insight on the intricacies of life as a drug lord. Narcos unfolds all the gritty trivialities we’d be missing out on in a fast-paced manner.

In short, Narcos is a show about the most powerful drug cartels in the world. All you should expect is non-stop action and I am not sure why I didn't watch it earlier.

3. Cactus Senshi (follow them on Instagram @cactussenshi)

If you're undecided whether you're craving sushi, Mexican food or Arabic cuisine, Cactus Senshi on C-Ring road is the perfect choice to satisfy anyone. This unique concept restaurant delivers on every level from variety, to taste to customer service—making the experience a must repeat. Their sushi really is top class, and their bento box offerings are great value for money, giving you a multi course meal all in one setting. For dessert I'd highly recommend trying the green tea matcha crepes. While they do offer delivery service, it's definitely worth your time to go visit the restaurant as the colourful decor will lift your mood instantly. Now, if I could just get my hands on one of those cozy cool red pillows...

4. Dementia (1955)

A nameless woman awakens from a nightmare. She grabs her switchblade and ventures out into the city streets where she is pursued by a grinning policeman with the face of her father.

What if Ed Wood and Luis Buñuel teamed up to direct a movie based on one of your recurring nightmares? You’d probably get something similar to director John Parker’s first (and only) film - Dementia (1955). Part B movie, part film noir, part expressionist cinema, and hurtling 100 miles per hour on dream logic, Dementia is one of the strangest American films from the 1950s.

Lensed by the cinematographer of Plan 9 From Outer Space, this movie has zero dialogue and uses pure visual storytelling to take us on a trance-like journey through the dark underbelly of urban America. A truly unique piece of outsider art, this film is a must watch for fans of both the avant grade and Z-grade schlock.

Dementia is available on DVD from Kino Video:

Watch it if you liked Glen or Glenda (1953) and Eraserhead (1977).

5. Ci Gusta

Ice cream has always been my favorite cheat-meal. Over the weekend, while waiting for my movie to start at Doha Festival City, I tried my new favorite ice cream outlet in Qatar.

It’s called Ci Gusta, and if you have a sweet tooth like me, you should give it a try. They have a few branches around Doha; in Al Nasser Street, Dar Al Salam Mall, and Gulf Mall. They also have a free taste sample for all their different flavours of frozen yogurt and gelato, so you don’t have to simply take my word for it.

6. Toro Toro at Marsa Malaz Kempinski

If you’re looking for a cool place to have fun and chill out with your friends Toro Toro at Marsa Malaz Kempinski would be a good choice. The place has a Hispanic inspired aesthetic and their food is quite authentic and delicious. So whether you want a quiet place to hang out or just have fun and have a little dance it’s a really nice place to hang out.

7. The Hired Man by Aminatta Forna

Aminatta Forna's The Hired Man is a book I thoroughly enjoyed reading.

Set in the wooded, mountainous Lika region of Croatia, The Hired Man is about an Englishwoman, Laura, and her two children who renovate a farmhouse with the help of local handyman, Duro.

The story is told from the perspective of Duro, and as the house is renovated, so too is the troubled history of the nearby town and its people revealed.

I actually went to an open talk with the author that was held at the Georgetown School of Foreign Service in Qatar. I was dragged along by a friend of mine that had read the book (I had not) and wanted to hear Forna speak.

I had a great impression of her after hearing her speak about the book and her own experience as a writer, and it piqued my interest enough to pick it up and read it myself.
