1. Friday Seascape

If you are a seafood lover then you will enjoy the Friday Seascape at the Doha Marriott every Friday. The recently introduced concept was designed to please all seafood lovers in Doha.

With original and freshly grilled delicacies, the hotel's chefs went the extra mile to bring a Mediterranean feel in the Corniche Restaurant. Lobster, salmon, fresh oysters and many surprises will amaze dinners and even convince the others.

The atmosphere at Corniche Restaurant is very festive, while the food is delicious. It is the perfect setup to enjoy a Friday night with family and friends. I highly recommend visiting the Friday Seafoodscape.

Where: Doha Marriott - Corniche Restaurant
When: Fridays
Timings: From 6:30 pm till 11:00 pm

2. Aspire Winter Festival

This week, I'll be recommending a great event for those looking to spend quality time with their families in Qatar. Aspire Winter Festival will be opening to the public this Thursday, and will feature more than 50 activities.

Festival organizers say there will be a number of unusual and fun activities, including a circus, musical performances, a pop up art gallery, a pirate treasure hunt, an extreme rush slide, an extreme race, a 7D cinema, a theatre, a sand pit as well as rock climbing and archery stations.

The festival will also have a dedicated food and beverage area, featuring more than 14 outlets, along with 30 shopping outlets introducing international vendors.

The festival will run through 1st May and will welcome visitors every day from 4 pm to 10 pm. On Fridays and Saturdays, the festival is open from 3 pm to 10 pm.

3. Qatar Total Open (12th - 18th Feb)

The ladies of the WTA tour return to the Doha for this year's Qatar Total Open. The reason I'm picking it a week early is to encourage people to get their tickets now! The tournament features a star studded lineup including defending champion Karolina Pliskova, current Aussie Open champion, Caroline Wozniacki, Simona Halep, Garbine Muguruza and the recently announced superstar wildcards in the form of Maria Sharapova and Vika Azarenka.

The great thing about the Khalifa Tennis and Squash stadium is that no matter where you sit you'll have a great view! And don't be surprised if you have a superstar walking past you on the grounds. Book your tickets online at www.qatartennis.org or at any of the kiosks at participating malls.

4. A Boy and His Dog (1975)

Decades after World War IV cleansed the world with nuclear fire, a teenaged boy and his psychic dog roam the irradiated desert wasteland of the former United States in search of food, shelter, and “companionship”.

A Boy and His Dog is THE film that invented the visual vocabulary of contemporary stories set in the post-apocalypse—cities reduced to rubble, roving gangs of deranged raiders and cannibals, makeshift settlements assembled from debris, the wealthy survivors of the war living in hermetically sealed underground bunkers, a barter system based on scavenged pre-war goods, irradiated mutant abominations roaming the land, and a society that has regressed back into a state of nature—a constant war of all against all.

The film uses these visual elements to tell a darkly comic story of anarchy vs. tyranny that never veers into didacticism. It also has one of the funniest final lines of dialogue in any film that I have watched.

Watch it if you liked Mad Max or the Fallout video game series.

5. Al Thahkira Mangroves

I was surprised that not a lot of people know about Al-Thakira mangroves so I’m recommending it for my top pick this week.

A 40-minute drive from Doha takes you to this beautiful place northeast of the country. You can go kayaking or enjoy a nice barbeque at this stunning location. It is breathtakingly green, which makes for a perfect weekend hangout, especially during this time of the year.

How to get there

Al Thakira Mangrove is located in the Al Thakira area, accessed by following Al Khor- Al Thakira Road until the last roundabout, then turning left (to the supermarket area) and left again to follow a road leading to the off road track. A few hundred meters later, you will arrive at the mangrove area. The off road track is smooth enough for sedans to make it through to the mangroves waterfront.

6. Full Metal Jacket (1987)

My pick for this week is Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket. It follows a platoon of U.S. Marines through their training, and assignment into the Vietnam War. What struck me in this movie was the situation of the characters living in their training scene, how the training itself focuses a lot on conditioning the characters to kill and how this afflicts their way of thinking, acting, and coping once within the war zone. I appreciate this movie because it's a lot more than a war movie, it's a look at human psychology when under situations not considered normal.

7. Radio Garden (app and website)

My friend introduced me to Radio Garden about a year ago when we were looking for something to pass the time and listen to. We went on the website and started clicking around to wind up listening to a radio station in Tahiti.

Radio Garden allows you to listen to thousands of live radio stations worldwide by rotating the globe, and it's really accurate, and easy to navigate.

Every green dot represents a city or town, and you can tap on it to tune into the radio stations broadcasting from that city. I did wish the range was larger for a lot of places, where I know for a fact the radio stations are many. Doha only had one!

What's great about Radio Garden's app version is that the radio keeps playing even after your phone goes to sleep, and if you're in the mood for something random, you can shake your phone to go to a random station!
