Doha Municipality will reopen a renovated fish market at the Doha Corniche starting from January 1, 2015. The market was renovated in an effort to improve hygiene.

The practice was considered unhygienic as fishermen displayed their wares on plastic sheets placed on the floor.

The area has been shaded to make sure the fish and other seafood stocks on sale are not exposed to sunlight or dust.

Each shaded area will be allotted to a vendor, guaranteeing sufficient space to accommodate large stocks of fish as well as walking space for customers.

Earlier, the market was unorganised and vendors used to occupy spaces along the walkway.

More people are expected to visit the renovated space to buy fresh fish once the market reopens this week. [The Peninsula]
