The Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Center (ROLACC) will hold an Open Evening for prospective applicants to the LLM in Corruption, Law and Governance program as well as the International Anti-Corruption Masterclass (IACMA).

Slated to take place on April 28, the event is being organized by the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Center (ROLACC) in Doha jointly with the University of Sussex.

The Open Evening will showcase the LLM in Corruption, Law and Governance for students interested in the course, and also allow interested attendees to enjoy the International Anti-Corruption Masterclass (IACMA) lectures, covering the topic, ‘Achieving Transparency – Issues in the Modern World’.

A number of guests are expected to participate in the free event to learn about the course details and listen to Sussex University academics and graduates highlight the importance of courses such as this in combating corruption.

The program, delivered in Doha by ROLACC in partnership with the University of Sussex, aims to educate graduates in recognizing corruption in its many forms and understanding what causes it. With this aim the program endeavors to foster long-term change in the region.

The keynote lecture for the IACMA program will be delivered by Leonard Frank McCarthy, ex-Vice President of Integrity at the World Bank.

Robtel Neajai Pailey, Leverhulme Early Career fellow at Oxford University and author of Gbagba and Jaadeh, two anti-corruption children’s books that have been used widely across her home country of Liberia, will deliver the second lecture.

Also presenting at the event is Blair Glencorse, director of Accountability Lab (a global NGO) and founder of Integrity Idol, a TV show that celebrates honest public officials.

McCarthy, Pailey and Glencorse are all winners of the 2018 Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani International Anti-Corruption Excellence Award, with McCarthy winning in the Lifetime Achievement category, Pailey being honoured in the Academic Research and Education category, and Accountability Lab securing the award in the youth creativity and engagement category. Glencorse is also a winner of the ace award.

The event comes in the wake of the graduation of the first cohort of the LLM in Corruption, Law and Governance. The degree of study was launched under the auspices of the His Excellency the Prime Minister and the Interior Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani in October of 2016.

The Chairman of the Board of Trustees of ROLACC HE Dr Ali Bin Fetais Al Marri said of the upcoming event, “We are delighted to present this opportunity to students who are interested in learning more about corruption, its causes, and the effect it can have on the most vulnerable members of our global community.”

The University’s Director of the LLM, Professor Daniel Hough, Head of the Department of Politics at the University of Sussex, said, “This is a great chance for enthusiastic potential students looking to enroll in our LLM program to get first-hand insights into the course.”

“The part-time, two-year Law master’s is taught by leading Sussex academics that specialize in global corruption. The current students enrolled on the course are from a variety of professional backgrounds including the legal sector, banking and finance, international relations, journalism and education,” he described.

“Our diverse student body is composed of men and women of several nationalities, including Qatari citizens, and citizens from the wider Arab region, and we look forward to welcoming more talented individuals to the program,” Professor Hough said.

He will also conduct a short sample lecture of what a student might expect when studying the LLM during the event.

ROLACC in Qatar is considered as one of the most prominent organizations in the region, as well as internationally, in the promotion of the rule of law and combatting corruption.

Alongside offering the LLM, the center serves as a hub for the anti-corruption community within the MENA region, offering training and workshops for international delegations in a number of important fields such as procurement and cybercrime.

The University of Sussex is known to be a world leader in the field of research and teaching in this area, especially at the Sussex Centre for the Study of Corruption, a research centre in the School of Law, Politics and Sociology.
