Skywatchers in Qatar will have the chance to see Saturn brighter than usual tonight, Sunday, October 4, as the ringed planet reaches opposition with the Sun.
According to the Qatar Calendar House, the phenomenon will make Saturn visible in Qatar’s sky throughout the night, from shortly after sunset until sunrise on Monday.
When can you see Saturn tonight?
Saturn will become visible above the eastern horizon after sunset at approximately 5:19 PM Doha time.
The planet will continue rising through the evening before reaching its highest point in the sky at around 11:24 PM, when it will be approximately 67 degrees above the southern horizon.
It will then gradually move towards the western horizon before setting around sunrise on Monday.
Saturn will be closer to Earth
Dr Bashir Marzouq, astronomer at Qatar Calendar House, said Saturn will be around 8.43 astronomical units from Earth during the event.
One astronomical unit is approximately 150 million kilometres.
Opposition occurs when Earth lies between the Sun and Saturn, placing the planet on the opposite side of the sky from the Sun.
This position generally makes Saturn particularly bright and allows it to remain visible for most of the night.
Can you see Saturn without a telescope?
Yes. Saturn can be seen with the naked eye as a bright yellow object under suitable conditions.
However, anyone hoping to see the planet’s famous rings will need binoculars with sufficient magnification or, preferably, a telescope.
When will Saturn reach opposition again?
Saturn last reached opposition on September 21, 2025.
According to Qatar Calendar House, the next opposition will occur on October 18, 2027.
The event offers residents across Qatar a relatively easy opportunity to spot one of the Solar System’s most distinctive planets tonight.
