On September 9, in honor of the International Day to Protect Education from Attack, HH Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, Chairperson of Education Above All and supporter of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), took part in a high-level panel discussion titled "Act Now to Protect Education from Attack" at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris.
In her remarks, Her Highness stressed the need to act quickly to put a stop to attacks on educational institutions across the world.
HH questioned why the same inventiveness could not be used to develop answers for the ongoing issue of attacks on education, drawing a contrast with the quickness and ingenuity used by the world community during the Covid-19 epidemic to guarantee that schooling continued.
Her Highness urged the global community to acknowledge that while students returned to school this past week, millions of youngsters were prevented from doing so due to attacks on education. She pleaded with world leaders not to overlook the "millions whose school buildings were destroyed, damaged, or occupied by military. Millions who simply do not have access to education because of violence." She questioned, "Why aren't we reacting right now with remedies to yet another big catastrophe: the issue of attacks on education?
HH spoke on the difficulties she had to overcome over her lengthy career as an education advocate. "For almost 25 years, my team and I have worked to persuade the world that educating children is important and that this includes all children, including poor children, children in remote areas, and children who live in or leave conflict zones", stated HH.
She emphasized the value of education during her speech, describing it as "the very weapon, children use to overcome the challenges they face," adding that "through education, our young people learn the skills they need to find a job, to contribute to their communities, to feed themselves and their families."
