The Global Issue Model United Nations (TGIMUN) is a completely youth-led Model UN (MUN) conference that runs virtually, giving youth around the world the opportunity to debate the most pressing issues.

Traditionally, Model UN has been viewed similarly to a debate competition where students are given the role of delegates from different nations, where they use that nation’s policies to draft solutions to current world problems.

TGIMUN aims to make this experience as accessible as possible to students and has taken steps to make the conference more debate-focused, rather than forcing delegates to spend a lot of time on documents and formalities.

During its inaugural conference last summer, TGIMUN was able to bring together a small group of passionate delegates from around the world.

The approach of being debate-focused was very successful as delegates, who did not want the pressure of drafting extensive documents during their summer, were able to enjoy debate and discussion while being educated on the problems that are currently being tackled by world leaders.

Being a virtual conference, TGIMUN was also able to provide many students with their first Model UN experiences, introducing them to debate; helping build their confidence and increasing their awareness of global crises.

However, TGIMUN does not want MUN to end at the conference, and also has the goal of bringing MUN outside the committee room and using the platform of Model UN to empower the youth to strive for real change in their communities.

The solutions discussed within committees can provide inspiration for students to identify the most prevalent issues in their communities, and scale down solutions put forth in the committee room to initiate community-based projects to combat these issues.

Therefore, TGIMUN has introduced service-targeted activities within the conference, allowing delegates to interact with NGOs and individuals that are working towards the SDGs in workshops and keynote sessions.

Under the theme “A World in Recovery”, TGIMUN welcomes any high school students to its second conference which is scheduled to take place via discord from August 8 till 9 this year.

Delegate registration ends on the 20th of July, so hurry to grab this opportunity to debate and discuss the most pressing issues as we recover from a pandemic, and gain a new perspective on these controversial topics through different viewpoints.
