The Minister of Transport His Excellency Jassim Saif Ahmed Al Sulaiti revealed that water taxis are to be tested in 2022 as a part of Qatar National Vision 2030 goals. The Ministry will test the taxis in the upcoming year to check their efficiency of operation in coastal areas, such as Dafna, Al Matar, and Lusail.
The Minister said that the system of water taxis is aimed at providing an alternative means of transportation apart from Doha Metro and buses. He said that the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), a type of bus that carried the specifications of a tram or train was successfully used in the FIFA Arab Cup 2021. The efficiency of nearly 200 buses was put to test and it helped transport several people from one place to another.
The main idea behind this was to experiment if the BRT system could be implemented in the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2022. After successfully proving its efficacy, the Ministry of Transport has decided to implement 800 electric buses that will arrive in Qatar for the football World Cup. The buses will prove crucial for transporting passengers and fans from places like Al Bait Stadium, Dukhan, and Mesaieed.
“A total of 200 electric vehicle chargers will be installed at public places, headquarters of ministries and government agencies,” the Minister said.
Al Sulaiti also stated that the exact specifications of the electric vehicles are in accordance with European specifications for cars, buses, and diesel trucks—to improve environmental protection.
