Director-General of World Health Organization (WHO), Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, yesterday lauded Qatar’s efforts and cooperation with WHO to support the Afghan people.

Dr Tedros arrived in Qatar yesterday and held talks with Her Excellency the Minister of Public Health Dr Hanan Mohamed Al Kuwari.

The meeting delved into different aspects of joint work between Qatar and the WHO, particularly the Qatar-WHO cooperation to support the Afghan people.

Following the meeting, the two officials toured the facilities temporarily housing Afghan evacuees in Qatar.

Dr Tedros and HE Dr Al Kuwari were given an overview of the procedures and services implemented at the facilities. These focus on different areas including education, sports, recreation and health.

During the visit, the two officials also met with some families and children.

Dr Tedros hailed Qatar’s coordination with the WHO in sending medical shipments to Afghanistan as well as the country’s arrangements to conduct a trip for him to Kabul, in order to inspect the field conditions.

The WHO Director-General said the Organization will continue to work together with Qatar and other partners to support the Afghan people at home and abroad.

“We thank Qatar for its generous support to the people of Afghanistan through medical and aid supply flights, including WHO’s, and hosting evacuees. Impressive whole of government and whole of society approach to helping the Afghan people,” Dr Tedros said in a tweet.

“Very glad that the local & international community has stepped up to donate food, clothes & other supplies to the compound,” he added.

HE Qatar’s Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs and Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Lolwah bint Rashid Al Khater thanked Dr Tedros and HE Dr Al Kuwari for visiting the Afghan evacuees.
