The World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championship Qatar 2025 officially commenced today at Qatar University’s Sports and Events Complex, with competitions running until December 30. The prestigious tournament brings together the world’s leading chess players to compete for four titles across rapid and blitz formats in both open and women’s categories.

This year’s championship has attracted an exceptional level of participation, with more than 400 players representing 70 countries. The open competitions feature over 250 players in each of the rapid and blitz events, while the women’s tournaments include 142 players, among them reigning world champions, elite specialists, and rising international talents.

The opening ceremony showcased Qatari cultural heritage through a traditional Ardah performance and a theatrical presentation, attended by senior officials from the International Chess Federation (FIDE). The tournament was formally inaugurated by Qatar Chess Federation President Mohammed Al Mudahka alongside FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich.

Play began with a high-profile match in the men’s rapid competition, where World Champion Magnus Carlsen made a strong start by securing three consecutive victories on the opening day. Several global chess stars are competing in Doha, including Gukesh Dommaraju, Fabiano Caruana, Anish Giri, Wesley So, Levon Aronian, Nodirbek Abdusattorov, and R. Praggnanandhaa, underscoring the championship’s elite status.

The women’s competition has also delivered compelling encounters, featuring five-time World Champion Ju Wenjun and former World Champion Tan Zhongyi, alongside top-ranked players from Asia, Europe, and the Americas.

Qatari players are gaining valuable exposure by competing against world-class opponents, reinforcing the event’s role in developing local talent and promoting chess at the national level.

Officials from the Ministry of Sports and Youth highlighted that hosting the championship further strengthens Qatar’s reputation as a global hub for major sporting events, citing the country’s advanced organisational capabilities and experience. Organisers emphasised that months of preparation have gone into delivering a world-class tournament that benefits both international participants and the local chess community.

FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich praised Qatar’s track record in hosting international chess events, noting that the championship traditionally provides an exciting conclusion to the global chess calendar. He also highlighted the tournament’s role in expanding chess culture across the region.

The total prize fund exceeds €1 million, distributed equally between the rapid and blitz competitions in both the open and women’s categories, reinforcing the championship’s standing as one of the most significant events in international chess.
