Qatar University’s (QU) Empower Generation Consortium concluded an intensive training course for high school Qatari students of both genders. The content of this training is focused on the Coronavirus pandemic and introduced medical virology in-depth on 11 August.

 This course is considered the first of its kind for high school students in the State of Qatar in terms of content which has been carefully designed to enrich the learning experience of the students.

During the training, 24 students from various schools have participated including; Micheal E. Debakey High School Qatar, Hayat Universal School, Doha Academy, Al Arqam School, Al Bayan Secondary School, Rabaa Al Adawiya Secondary School Girls, Rouda Bint Mohamed Secondary Girls, Qatar Secondary School, and Aleman Secondary School Girls.

The training was initiated under the directions and leadership of the consortium founder, Prof. Asmaa Althani, Professor of Virology and the Director of the Biomedical Research Center and Associate Vice President for Strategic Planning at the Medical and Health Sciences Office.

Prof. Althani said, “The consortium is a model for high impact collaborative projects that exhibit the active role of Qatar University in evaluating the market’s occupational demands and developing solutions for the capacity shortage, we eventually aim to achieve a national base of human resources in healthcare and life sciences.”

The training was designed and supervised by Dr. Hadi Yassin, Associate Professor and Researcher in Virology and the Research Projects Manager at the Biomedical Research Center, D. Yassin said, “This specialized course is designed for young ambitious Qatari who are interested in virology and scientific research. This course was concluded with ten literature-based scientific articles completed by the participating students as one of the training completion requirements.”

This intensive training course focused on medical virology and epidemiology and comprised of; a session of Basics of Medical Virology which was conveyed by Ms. Aisha Fakhroo, another session about COVID 19 was conveyed by Ms. Najlaa Al-Thani and Ms. Al Reem Johar, whereas the genomics and personalized medicine in viral diseases was conveyed by Ms. Al Bandari Al-Khater. All of the trainers are a team from Barzan Holdings who are spending a research training period at the BRC on infectious diseases and molecular biology.

Reiterating that the Empower Generations Consortium on behalf of Qatar University won the “Oscar of Education on the Middle-East”, the World’s Gold for the Discipline of "Life Sciences” and the World’s Silver for the “Best University-Employer Partnership in 2019 at QS- Reimagine Education conference in London-UK.
