According to the World Health Organization, one in four people will be affected by a mental health problem. The current corona pandemic has further worsened this by creating a situation of ambiguity, feelings of apprehension and anxiety.
As a result of the pandemic, individuals are required to follow social distancing and work or study from home, giving a rise to feelings of isolation, bringing a host of mental health concerns to the surface of society. An increase in psychological disorders like anxiety, depression and added introversion in school-aged children from the lack of social interaction have become major concerns for schools that are striving to keep educational continuity while keeping students’ mental health afloat.

ACS International School Doha has placed a high level of importance on mental health by integrating it well within their core philosophy and using it in their approach to education. From practices followed before the pandemic to the additional programmes incorporated in response to it, ACS has taken an adaptive and flexible approach to ensure the mental well-being of their students.
In the face of COVID-19, ASC Doha has increased efforts in providing support to their students, parents and staff. Students are encouraged to ‘Rate your mood’ in online one-on-one sessions and an open communication channel has been established to understand the wellbeing of the entire community.
The school’s strong relationship with Sidra Medicine, one of Qatar’s leading medical research and healthcare providers, developed training programmes which bring in licensed medical professionals to the school to touch upon various topics.

According to ACS Doha, frequent feedback from both student body and parents have allowed them to improve current programmes while monitoring effectiveness. Additionally, their comprehensive 360-approach to well-being accounts for activities spanning mind, body and soul. The new 60,000 square landmark campus has dedicated spaces for athletics, swimming and fitness, with an aim to promote student health.
ACS Doha understands that it is imperative to pay attention to our thoughts, our patterns and our behaviors as to how they may be impacting our overall mood. Moreover, creating awareness around mental health as part of school can help future generations with the right emotional tools and coping mechanisms needed to navigate an increasingly complex world.
