In collaboration with the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME), the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC) has begun installing air quality monitoring stations at FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 tournament venues.
In accordance with the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Sustainability Strategy, the first stations were built in the Qatar University training site's precinct as part of a project to improve air quality. In the near future, monitoring stations will be built at the Al Janoub Stadium precinct.
Jassim Al Jaidah, the SC’s Local Stakeholders Relations Manager for Sustainability, said: “These stations will monitor and measure air quality according to the weather, along with the percentage of gases and other particles in the air. The data provided will help the SC make informed decisions in relation to improving air quality inside Qatar 2022 tournament venues, in line with the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Sustainability Strategy.”
One of Qatar's sustainability goal is to improve air quality. The government is dedicated to hosting a carbon-neutral FIFA World Cup and using the mega-event to leave a green legacy throughout the country and region.
To achieve a carbon-neutral competition, the SC calculated the amount of carbon emissions generated by hosting the World Cup and educated local and regional stakeholders about the importance of decreasing emissions.
Emissions have been reduced during the construction of World Cup infrastructure through a number of means, including the design and construction phases, which have reduced energy and water consumption, prioritised recycling and efficiently dealt with waste.
Furthermore, every Qatar 2022 stadium must attain a four-star certification under the Global Sustainability Assessment System, which requires a project to reduce energy and water use by 30 percent compared to international standards, among other things.
The tournament's modest footprint will aid Qatar in becoming carbon-neutral. The event's compact nature, with all venues close together and no internal flights required for fans and players, will considerably save carbon emissions.
Qatar's green public transportation network, which includes the Doha Metro and electric buses, will also contribute to the country's sustainability goals.
