FIFA tournament organizers are now on the lookout for people who can provide audio descriptive commentary for blind and partially-sighted fans for FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, this year.

The initiative to provide Arabic commentary was first tested out in last year’s FIFA Arab Cup 2021 by the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 LLC (Q22) in collaboration with Hamad Bin Khalifa University’s Translation and Interpreting Institute and the Center for Access to Football in Europe (CAFÉ). The service helps describe the detailed play-by-play updates, players’ reactions, and the stadiums’ general atmosphere for blind fans.

Fans who are visually challenged can use this service by simply downloading an app on their device. Hearing the FIFA commentary would certainly elevate such fans’ experience and ensure they don’t miss out on the excitement of the global football tournament.

For this year’s football tournament (to be held from November 18 to December 21), both Arabic and English speakers are invited to register. The selected applicants will receive free training from March 19 till October. The interested applicants are required to produce a 60-second audio recording of their commentary on any football match they choose. The commentary must be done either in Arabic or English. The organizing committee will review the candidates’ aptitude for commentating.

Once selected, the candidate will be trained face-to-face in the TII premises in Doha. The workshop training will continue from Sundays to Thursdays, in small groups from 3.50 pm–7 pm. Selected commentators will also receive appreciation payment as a reward for their services.

Those who wish to participate in the commentary training can register here.
