In cooperation with the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME), the Supervisory Committee of Beautification of Roads and Public Places (Ashghal) has announced the start of several projects to establish public parks within neighborhoods in different places in Qatar.

The Al Furjan Gardens public parks project aims to humanize cities and change a culture that is primarily reliant on the use of automobiles into one that is friendly to pedestrians and cyclists, as well as to create destinations and squares that encourage all family members to live a healthy lifestyle and exercise, and to choose nearby and enjoyable destinations outside of the closed building.

Ashghal is focused on the design and implementation of large green areas for tourists and visitors from all over the world, such as central parks.

The state, in addition to establishing modest green areas such as Al Furjan Gardens that serve a specific area's population, has also implemented green squares in various locations to assist safeguard the environment.

Parks will be built in every part of Qatar to serve as an outlet for many of the country's residential areas. The gardens are situated near houses and are accessible without the use of a car, encouraging residents to visit them on a regular basis and spend quality time in a healthy and safe environment.

According to Engineer Amna Al-Badr, Secretary of the Committee, increasing green areas within cities contributes to enhancing the sustainability of environmental development in line with the fourth pillar of Qatar National Vision 2030.

Mr. Abdulhadi Al-Marri, Director of the Ministry of Municipality and Environment's Climate Change Department, stated that the allocation of many plots of land for the implementation of Al Furjan Gardens projects fall within the Ministry's strategic plan to expand the establishment of parks, plant trees, and increase green spaces.

Furthermore, it aims to improve weather conditions, reduce pollutants, and lower temperatures at various times throughout the year.

Additionally, they play an important role in purifying the atmosphere and limiting the effects of climate change, as well as safeguarding Al Furjan from dust, which has a favorable impact on the population's health and safety.

The Al Furjan Gardens are being developed to incorporate a variety of amenities that will make it a fun place for all members of the family, including the elderly, young, and children.

These amenities and services differ by park area, such as pedestrian and cycling pathways, seating and relaxation places, and some even contain children's play areas, workout equipment, and kiosks.

The elderly and persons with special needs are taken into account during the design phase of the parks.

Implementation of designs for several parks, including Fereej Al Sudan, Fereej Hazm Al Markhiya, Al Thamid, Rawdat Iqdim, Al Maarad, and others, has begun.

Engineer Reem Khaled Al-Muraikhi, the committee's Projects Design Manager, indicated that she is now working on the implementation of the design of three gardens totaling 42,000 square meters.

Fareej Al Thameed Park will cover an area of approximately 15,750 square metres, whereas Hazm Al Markhiya Park, located in Doha Municipality, would cover an area of around 24,340 square metres. These parks are expected to be open to the public in the third quarter of 2022.

Engineer Mansour Jaafar Al-Moussawi, the committee's Projects Design Manager, stated that he is currently working on the design of several gardens totaling 34,553 square meters, including Al Thumama Park in Doha Municipality, Al Wajba Park in Al Rayyan Municipality, and three gardens in Al Wakra Municipality.

Al-Thumama Park, which is around 4,400 square meters, is located in an area that includes residential facilities, sports and commercial facilities, and offices, according to Al-Moussawi, and is close to two mosques that draw visitors to the area.

As a result, it was meant to blend in with the surroundings and contribute to the creation of a healthy green environment that stimulates social contact among residents, employees, and visitors to the region.

Al-Thumama Park will feature numerous seating places as well as a children's play area, as well as a shared route for walking, running, and bicycling.

Projects Design Manager Engineer Maryam Al Kuwari pointed out that she is overseeing the design of various parks in Al Rayyan Municipality, including Bu Hamour Park, which is 5,800 square meters, Al Sailiya Park, which is 6,370 square meters, and Maraikh Park, which is 3,640 square meters.

She affirmed that the gardens will be built in keeping with the essence of the neighborhood, the neighboring buildings, and the nearby attractions.

For instance, one of the characteristic elements of the Bu Hamour area is the historic marketplaces, such as the central market, Thursday and Friday market, and others, which influenced the major design lines of Bu Hamour Garden.

The garden's curves were designed to resemble the shapes of traditional market umbrellas, with their employment proportional to the garden's purposes.

Ashghal has previously developed numerous central parks and squares, including 5/6 Park, Al Daayen Park, Al Shura Square, Post Square, and other projects that contribute to improving the climate and protecting the environment.

Furthermore, the committee collaborates with a number of government ministries and agencies in Qatar, including the Ministry of Municipality and Environment, the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, the Ministry of Culture and Sports and the Museums Authority, among others.
