In a bid to enhance Qatar’s sewage networks, the Public Works Authority ‘Ashghal’ has rolled out the Refurbishment and Upgrading Works program that focuses on upgrading four pumping stations according to the best international standards.
The pumping stations are located in key areas of Doha comprising New Salata, Al Mansoura, Al Messila and Al Rayyan.

The project springs from an ambition to enhance the capacity of the pumping stations by 62 percent to 211 percent in order to accommodate both current and future sewage flows within these significant areas.
The upgrading of these pumps would also allow the country to cope with the future development and the expected population growth in Qatar.
According to Ashghal, the refurbishment works involve installation of new equipment to improve the performance and functionality of the pumping stations with upgraded control systems, including new telemetry systems, improved fire alarm and suppression systems and new instrumentation among others.
This is in addition to enabling improved odor control systems to prevent or reduce bad odors in the surrounding areas.

Eng Ali Al Anzi from the Drainage Networks Projects Department at Ashghal said three of the four pumping stations would undergo a dramatic increase in their ability to accommodate and pump the sewage flows, as opposed to the current capacity with the existing pumping stations and equipment.
The New Salata pumping station’s capacity will be enhanced by approximately 62 percent, allowing around 8,600 m3/day to be pumped instead of the current 5,300 m3/day.
The Al Messila pumping station’s capacity will be increased by approximately 211 percent, allowing 14,000 m3/day to be pumped instead of the current 4,500 m3/day.
The Al Rayyan pumping station’s capacity will be augmented by 161 percent, to pump around 4,700 m3/day instead of the current 1,800 m3/day.
Eng Al Anzi added that the upgrade works at the fourth pumping station, located in Al Mansoura, include the installation of new equipment and constructing a new Odor Control Unit (OCU) to enable more efficient operations and to prevent bad odor at this location.
In addition, the project includes decommissioning of the Ras Abu Abboud Pumping Station, to be replaced by a new gravity sewer line.

The implementation of the project is being taken care of by Contracting Services & Trading Company (GEC). It is expected to be finished in the second quarter of 2021.
Ashghal’s keenness to support local manufacturers has resulted in ‘Made in Qatar’ materials being used in the project, such as concrete, reinforced steel, precast manholes, GRP (glass reinforce plastic) pipes and ducts, GRP tanks, UPVC (unplasticised polyvinyl chloride) pipes and conduits and RC jacking pipes (concrete pipes).
The materials meet the required quality standards and qualifications needed to carry out the project.
The project is designed to ensure the preservation of the environment with all pumping processes done in line with environmental assessment standards.
