Qatar's Public Works Authority, Ashghal, has added two more prestigious honors to its list of achievements.

The authority was one of the very few organizations have been declared the overall winner in the following categories of the International Safety Awards 2020 by the British Safety Council:

"Wellbeing Initiative" for protecting its employees from the risk of injury and ill health at work, and "Best Team of the Year" for the Roads and Infrastructure project in West Muaither (Package 3).

The awards acknowledged Ashghal's commitment to ensuring the health and safety of its workers and workplaces in 2019.

Last year, Ashghal succeeded in undertaking the health screening of 78,197 workers, or 96.5 percent of the entire workforce.

The screening sought to find the three leading causes of mortality and morbidity among these were: diabetes (high blood sugar), hypertension (high blood pressure), and high cholesterol (dyslipidemia/high level of fats in the blood).

In the case, a worker's results were abnormal, they were referred to a hospital, part of the Ministry of Public Health's network.

The workers were tested once again and managed with an individualized treatment plan. If needed, they were provided medication and also benefitted from regular follow-ups.

This kind of a proactive health program is among very few in the world to be implemented in an infrastructure program.

About the Roads and Infrastructure Project in West Muaither (Package 3), Ashghal commenced the project works in January last year. It achieved 1.2 million LTI free man-hours in 2019, with 770 employed by the main contractor, Boom Construction.

The project spans over an area of 1,940,000 square meters and aims at providing full infrastructure and utilities including telecommunication networks, potable water, and electricity networks.

The project implemented an effective Health and Safety (H&S) Management System covering all key aspects such as proactive risk identification and management process, the participation of all levels of staff in health and safety matters, among other elements.

Director of Projects Affairs, Engineer Yousef Al-Emadi, commented, "We are delighted to be recognized once again by the British Safety Council. The double win is a testament to Ashghal's commitment to Health and Safety and its leading position in the Qatari construction industry in terms of promoting awareness through targeted initiatives, and implementing best health and safety practices."
