New to Doha and need a bank account that will not drain your student budget?
QIB’s Bedaya University Students Package is one of the clearest dedicated student-banking products currently available in Qatar. But it is not the only account worth considering.
QNB is particularly notable for students and young adults who want a standard account with no monthly fee or minimum-balance requirement, while Commercial Bank and Doha Bank offer extensive mobile-banking services. HSBC can also be useful, particularly for internationally mobile customers, although its account-opening requirements are less straightforward for a student without a salary.
The best choice depends on whether you want:
- A dedicated student account
- No minimum balance
- Fully digital account opening
- International banking
- Cheap transfers
- A strong mobile app
- Student discounts and perks
Whether you are arriving at Education City, starting at Qatar University or receiving your first salary after graduation, your bank account will become central to everyday spending, transfers, bills and savings.
Information checked against current bank websites on 13 August 2026. Eligibility criteria, fees and product benefits can change, so confirm the latest terms with the bank before opening an account.
What to look for in a student banking app
Not every current or savings account is well suited to someone living on a student budget.
Before opening one, check the following.
A genuinely useful mobile app
Look for functions such as:
- Local transfers
- International transfers
- Bill payments
- Debit-card controls
- Biometric login
- Statements
- Transaction history
- Beneficiary management
- Instant-payment services
Do not choose a bank solely because its app looks modern. Check whether the services you will actually use carry transaction fees.
Low or no minimum balance
This matters more than many app features.
A student who keeps only a few hundred riyals in an account should check:
- Minimum opening deposit
- Minimum monthly balance
- Below-minimum-balance fee
- Dormancy charges
- Early account-closure fees
QNB’s current account currently states that there is no monthly charge and no minimum balance requirement. Doha Bank’s current fee schedule likewise lists no minimum-balance commission on active current and savings accounts.
Do not assume every Qatar bank follows the same rule.
Digital account opening
This can make a major difference if you are busy with classes.
QIB allows eligible students to open the Bedaya University Student Account through the QIB Mobile App. QNB also offers fully digital onboarding for eligible residents aged over 18 through QNB Mobile Banking.
Other banks may let you begin an application online while still requiring a branch visit or additional verification.
A suitable debit card
Check that the card:
- Has no annual fee where possible
- Supports contactless payments
- Works with the mobile wallet you use
- Has reasonable overseas fees
- Offers adequate ATM access
QIB’s Bedaya debit card currently has no issuance or annual fee and supports contactless payments. Local ATM withdrawals are free, while GCC and international withdrawals have separate charges.
Do not describe any debit card as working “everywhere.” Acceptance depends on the merchant, card network and payment system.
Fee transparency
Look beyond the account headline.
Possible charges include:
- Replacement debit cards
- International withdrawals
- Currency conversion
- International transfers
- Local instant transfers
- Early account closure
- Dormant-account reactivation
- Paper statements
For example, Doha Bank currently charges no fee for domestic NAPS ATM withdrawals but lists separate fees for GCC and other overseas withdrawals.
Student perks and offers
Perks can be useful, but they should come after the fundamentals.
Do not choose an expensive or restrictive account simply because it includes restaurant discounts.
Check whether the benefit is something you will actually use.
Top banking apps and accounts for students in Qatar
There is no objectively “best” Qatar bank for every student.
A better way to compare them is by type.
QIB — Bedaya University Students Package
Qatar Islamic Bank currently offers one of the most clearly defined student-specific accounts in Qatar.
The Bedaya University Students Package is specifically designed for university students and currently includes:
- Digital account opening through the QIB Mobile App
- Free Bedaya debit card
- Bedaya credit-card eligibility
- Complimentary QIB MyBook subscription
- Buy-one-get-one offers
- Digital account management
Who can apply?
QIB currently states that applicants must be:
18–25 years old
Required documents currently include:
- Student ID
- Valid QID
- Valid passport for expatriates
- Income or salary proof
This age restriction is important. A 26-year-old postgraduate student, for example, should not assume they qualify simply because they are enrolled at university.
Digital opening
The process can be completed through the QIB Mobile App.
QIB’s current process includes:
- Selecting the Bedaya University Student Account
- Uploading the student ID
- Scanning the QID and passport where applicable
- Completing selfie identity verification
- Providing address, income and other personal details
- Completing tax declarations
- Selecting debit-card delivery
- Creating mobile-banking credentials
That makes Bedaya particularly attractive to an eligible student who wants to avoid a branch visit.
Debit and credit cards
The Bedaya debit card currently has:
- Free issuance
- No annual fee
- Contactless functionality
- Free local ATM cash withdrawals
QIB also advertises a Bedaya Platinum credit card with no issuance or annual fee.
But students should understand the difference between no annual fee and free borrowing.
QIB currently lists a 1% monthly profit rate on unpaid outstanding balances on the Bedaya Platinum card.
Use a credit card only if you understand the repayment terms.
For assistance, QIB’s current 24/7 customer-care number is 4444 8444.
QNB
QNB is not offering the same kind of heavily student-branded package as QIB Bedaya, but its ordinary current account deserves serious consideration for a student or young adult.
Its current account currently includes:
- No monthly account charge
- No minimum-balance requirement
- Free debit card
- Free QNB eBanking
- Free transfers between QNB accounts
- Free utility and credit-card payments
For someone whose priority is simply “give me an everyday account without a minimum-balance penalty,” that is a strong combination.
Digital onboarding
Eligible new customers can also open a QNB Current or Savings Account entirely through the mobile app.
QNB currently requires digital applicants to:
- Be over 18
- Be a Qatari citizen or resident
- Have a postpaid Qatar mobile number
The bank says the account can be created within the app without visiting a branch, with a virtual debit card available for activation.
QNB’s normal current-account information states that an original passport and QID are required.
That makes QNB worth adding to any comparison aimed at students rather than limiting the list to QIB, Commercial Bank, Doha Bank and HSBC.
Commercial Bank
Commercial Bank does not need to be described as having a dedicated student account to be relevant.
Its main strength for this audience is digital banking.
Commercial Bank stated that its redesigned mobile app provided more than 120 services, including card and account-management functionality. It has also received regional recognition for its mobile banking and remittance services.
In March 2026, Commercial Bank added CB Connect, allowing logged-in customers to call its contact centre directly from inside the app with their identity already authenticated.
The bank also lists a Personal Digital Account Opening service on its current website.
However, students should confirm the exact:
- Account type
- Eligibility
- Minimum balance
- Debit-card charges
- Transfer charges
before opening an account.
Do not imply that Commercial Bank currently has a student-specific package unless the bank publishes one.
Doha Bank
Doha Bank is another general retail-banking option rather than a dedicated university-student account.
Its current retail pages list standard current, savings and deposit products, while its special-package section currently highlights other packages rather than a university account.
One advantage for someone on a tight budget is the current fee structure.
Doha Bank currently lists:
Minimum-balance commission on an active current or savings account — none
Primary ATM/debit-card issuance — free
Cash withdrawal through Doha Bank or other Qatar NAPS ATMs — free
Its mobile-banking service offers account management, and Doha Bank’s digital channels support services such as transfers and utility payments.
Doha Bank also provides separate card-control functionality through Doha Pay, including controls for e-commerce and international transactions.
For support, Doha Bank currently operates a 24/7 call centre on +974 4445 6000 and lists Hellodoha@dohabank.com.qa as its customer-contact email.
HSBC Qatar
HSBC can be attractive if international banking matters to you, but the right account type matters.
HSBC Current Account
HSBC’s Qatar Current Account currently includes:
- Free mobile and online banking
- Free SMS alerts
- Free international debit card
- No monthly fee
However, an expatriate opening the current account currently needs:
- Original passport
- Valid residence/work documentation
- QID
- Salary-transfer letter
- Employer introduction letter
- Proof of residence
The account-opening process must also be completed in person at a branch.
That makes it less suitable for a full-time student who does not have an employer or salary.
HSBC Savings Account
The HSBC Savings Account may be more relevant for that student.
It currently offers:
- No minimum monthly balance requirement
- Free debit-card issuance
- Free HSBC Qatar ATM withdrawals
- Free online, phone and mobile banking
- Free SMS alerts
It still requires an in-person branch visit, and expatriates need identification and residence documents.
For ordinary Personal Banking enquiries, HSBC Qatar’s current number is +974 4442 4722.
Do not use ceqatarretail@hsbc.com as the main general-support contact in this guide: HSBC currently publishes that address in connection with privacy and data-protection enquiries.
How to open a student account in Qatar, step by step
The exact process depends on the bank.
1. Check your eligibility
Do this before choosing based on app features.
For example, QIB Bedaya requires applicants to be university students aged 18–25.
A standard current or savings account may have different requirements.
2. Sort out your identification
For QIB Bedaya, a valid QID is required for both Qataris and expatriates, with expatriates also providing a valid passport.
QNB’s ordinary current account likewise lists a QID and passport among the main identification documents.
There are exceptions for some newcomer products, discussed below.
3. Prepare your student documents
For a dedicated student package, expect to provide evidence that you are actually enrolled.
QIB Bedaya specifically asks for a student ID. It currently also lists income/salary proof among its requirements.
Do not assume every bank accepts the same university documents.
4. Open digitally where available
For QIB Bedaya, the application can be completed through the QIB Mobile App.
QNB also provides branchless digital onboarding for eligible residents through QNB Mobile Banking.
HSBC, by contrast, currently requires a personal branch visit to complete its Current or Savings Account opening process.
5. Activate your card and security features
Once the account is active:
- Activate the debit card
- Set your PIN
- Enable biometric login
- Turn on transaction notifications
- Add the card to an approved mobile wallet where supported
- Review spending and withdrawal limits
Never share:
- OTPs
- PINs
- Passwords
- Full card credentials
with someone claiming to be from the bank.
QIB specifically warns customers that it will not call or email asking for confidential banking credentials such as passwords or PINs.
6. Test the account
Make a small transfer or payment and make sure you understand:
- Where transfers appear
- How beneficiaries are added
- What fees apply
- How card controls work
- How to contact the bank if something goes wrong
Do this before relying on the account for a major rent, tuition or international payment.
Fees, minimum balance and the fine print
There is no one Qatar-wide student-bank fee structure.
Compare each account individually.
Minimum balance
Current examples show why this matters:
QNB Current Account — no minimum balance and no monthly charge.
Doha Bank active Current/Savings Accounts — no minimum-balance commission under the current published fee schedule.
HSBC Savings Account — no minimum monthly balance requirement.
For QIB Bedaya, the current product page does not publish a simple general minimum-balance figure, so confirm the account terms directly rather than assuming one.
Debit card
Do not assume every card at every bank is free forever.
QIB’s Bedaya debit card currently has free issuance and no annual fee.
QNB’s standard Current Account currently includes a free debit card.
Doha Bank currently lists primary debit-card issuance as free but charges for certain replacements and additional cards.
SMS and transaction alerts
Charges differ.
Doha Bank’s current fee schedule lists SMS PUSH alerts as free, while HSBC advertises free SMS alerts with its Current and Savings Accounts.
Check the specific account rather than assuming every notification service is free.
ATM withdrawals
The statement “other-bank ATMs always cost extra” is inaccurate.
Doha Bank currently lists cash withdrawals through its own and other Qatar NAPS ATMs as free.
QIB also lists local debit-card ATM withdrawals as free.
Overseas withdrawals can carry fees.
Transfers
Check both local and international fees.
Doha Bank, for example, currently publishes separate charges for ordinary domestic-bank transfers, FAWRAN instant transfers and overseas transfers.
If your family regularly sends money from abroad—or you regularly send money home—this can matter more than restaurant discounts.
Dormancy
Do not leave an account completely forgotten for years.
Banks have dormancy rules and may charge for certain dormant-account services. Doha Bank, for example, currently charges QAR 10 on a dormant account with a balance below QAR 500 and QAR 100 for dormant-account activation.
Always read the current tariff before opening the account.
Money tips for students living in Doha
Use card controls
If your bank lets you freeze or restrict your card digitally, learn how to do it before you need it.
QIB provides debit-card controls through its app, Commercial Bank offers security controls through CBQ Mobile and Doha Bank offers card controls through Doha Pay.
Use transfers instead of unnecessary cash
Mobile transfers are useful for:
- Splitting groceries
- Paying a flatmate
- Sending money between your own accounts
- Paying certain bills
Check the fee first, especially for instant and international transfers.
Turn on transaction alerts
Alerts make it easier to catch a payment you do not recognise.
If something looks suspicious, contact the bank using the number shown on its official website or on the back of your card—not a phone number sent to you in an unexpected message.
Compare international transfers
Do not compare only the transfer fee.
Check:
- Transfer fee
- Exchange rate
- Correspondent-bank charges
- Amount the recipient actually receives
- Transfer speed
The service that advertises the lowest fee does not necessarily deliver the most money at the other end.
Keep a buffer only where it makes sense
If your account has a minimum-balance requirement, keep enough money to avoid the relevant charge.
But do not maintain an unnecessarily large balance simply because somebody told you every Qatar account has a minimum requirement. Several current accounts do not.
FAQs
Can students open a bank account in Qatar online?
Yes, with some banks and products.
QIB allows eligible students aged 18–25 to open the Bedaya University Students Account through its mobile app.
QNB also offers branchless digital opening of Current and Savings Accounts for eligible Qatar citizens and residents over 18 with a postpaid Qatar mobile number.
HSBC currently requires applicants to complete the Current and Savings Account opening process in a branch.
Which is the best banking app for students in Qatar?
There is no objective winner.
For a dedicated university-student product, QIB Bedaya is one of the clearest current options because the package itself is built around university students aged 18–25.
For someone prioritising no minimum balance and fully digital onboarding, QNB’s standard Current Account is also worth comparing.
Commercial Bank and Doha Bank both offer extensive digital banking, while HSBC may appeal to customers who value its international banking network.
Compare the actual account terms, not just the app.
What documents do I need to open a student account?
For QIB Bedaya, the current requirements are:
- Student ID
- Valid QID
- Valid passport for expatriates
- Income/salary proof
Applicants must be aged 18–25.
Other banks and account types use different requirements.
Do student accounts in Qatar have a minimum balance?
Not necessarily.
There is no single rule applying to every bank.
QNB currently states that its Current Account has no minimum-balance requirement, Doha Bank lists no minimum-balance commission on active current and savings accounts, and HSBC’s Savings Account has no minimum monthly balance requirement.
Check the exact product before opening it.
Can I get an account without a QID?
For many ordinary resident accounts, a QID is required.
QIB Bedaya requires a valid QID, while QNB’s standard Current Account lists an original passport and Qatar ID among its required documents.
However, it is not accurate to say it is impossible in every case.
QNB currently offers an eAccount service that can begin before an eligible newcomer arrives in Qatar, using documents including a valid passport, job offer and Qatar visa.
That route is primarily relevant to incoming employees rather than a typical university student.
Are there fees for using banking apps?
Downloading or registering for mobile banking is generally not where the important costs arise.
For example, Doha Bank currently lists mobile-banking registration, password reset and basic account enquiries as free, while HSBC provides free mobile banking with its Current and Savings Accounts.
Individual transactions can still cost money.
Check fees for:
- Transfers
- Overseas ATM use
- Foreign-currency spending
- Card replacement
- Paper statements
- Dormancy
- Other optional services
before choosing an account.
Is the QIB Bedaya credit card free?
It currently has no issuance or annual fee, but using credit can still cost money.
QIB lists a 1% monthly profit rate on unpaid outstanding balances on the Bedaya Platinum Credit Card, along with other transaction-specific fees.
Students should therefore treat the credit card as borrowing, not as free money.
Information checked on 13 August 2026. Bank eligibility criteria, fees, digital-onboarding procedures and card benefits can change. Check the bank's current account page and tariff of charges immediately before applying.
