The Telecommunications and Information Technology industry, as well as the postal sector and access to digital media, are all regulated by the Communications Regulatory Authority (CRA). The CRA promotes and supports an open and competitive ICT industry that provides advanced, innovative, and dependable communications services. The CRA's work revolves around balancing the rights of consumers with the needs of service providers.
The Communications Regulatory Authority (CRA) has launched a public consultation on fifth-generation (5G) private mobile networks, with the goal of gathering stakeholder feedback on their level of interest in implementing 5G private mobile networks in Qatar, as well as various regulatory options to assist enterprises, businesses, and government entities taking an interest in implementing them.
Businesses and government institutions can use private telecommunications networks to ensure reliable, flexible, and secure voice and data connections on-site and between sites.
The Communications Regulatory Authority launched a public consultation about 5G private mobile networks, with the aim of receiving views and comments of stakeholders about their interest in implementing 5G private mobile networks https://t.co/fZ5O1Ase2T
Three regulatory options were presented for consultation.
- Enterprises intending to establish a 5G private mobile network can acquire services from the two telecom service
providers Ooredoo Qatar and Vodafone Qatar. - To make radio frequency available to businesses that want to build a 5G private mobile network, allowing them to offer it themselves if they have the necessary radio spectrum license.
- To award the required permits to a new service provider with a limited scope of 5G private mobile network offering to businesses.
Depending on the results of this consultation, Qatar may support more than one alternative, as the adoption of one option does not restrict the adoption of the others.
CRA is interested in hearing from stakeholders, including enterprises interested in implementing a 5G private mobile network and suppliers of 5G services and related technologies, in order to ensure the transparency of the regulatory process and develop the necessary regulatory instruments to effectively regulate the telecom sector.
When CRA finalizes its position on this issue, it will take into account all of the feedback it has received.
Stakeholders and interested parties can submit their related opinions and comments by no later than July 21, 2022 at the email: raconsultation@cra.gov.qa
The public consultation document can be accessed through this link.
