Saudi Arabia’s Cabinet has formally approved a landmark agreement to develop a high-speed electric railway connecting Riyadh and Doha, marking a major step toward enhanced mobility and tourism across the Gulf region.

The approval was granted during the Cabinet’s weekly meeting chaired by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. According to Arab News, the 785-kilometre rail line is scheduled to commence operations in June 2026 and will reduce travel time between the two capitals to approximately two hours, opening new avenues for economic, cultural, and social exchange.

The project aligns closely with Qatar National Vision 2030 and Saudi Vision 2030, both of which emphasise sustainable transportation, economic diversification, and tourism growth. Designed as a fast and environmentally friendly alternative to air and road travel, the railway is expected to significantly enhance regional connectivity while contributing to lower carbon emissions.

From a tourism perspective, the rail link is set to transform cross-border travel by enabling seamless multi-destination journeys. Increased accessibility is expected to boost visitor flows, benefiting Qatar’s luxury, cultural, and leisure offerings, alongside Saudi Arabia’s expanding portfolio of heritage and contemporary attractions.

Beyond tourism, the railway is anticipated to support deeper economic integration by facilitating the movement of professionals, services, and goods. It is also expected to attract foreign investment, encourage private sector participation, and strengthen bilateral cooperation, setting a new benchmark for sustainable infrastructure development in the Gulf.
