Ms. Manal Musallam Othman, Director of Diabetes Education achieves her Ph.D for the first time, making it a momentous day for the College of Medicine at Qatar University

Her thesis, titled "Development of a Problem and Attributes based DIabetes self-management (PARADIGM) intervention," critically examined the structure of existing diabetes self-management interventions and their impact on various levels of outcomes, like knowledge, physical activity, glycated hemoglobin, and quality of life. She successfully completed the PhD thesis on April 11, 2022, as a doctorate candidate.

Dr. Suhad Daher-Nashif and Dr. Tanya Kane (Population Medicine Department, QU Health, College of Medicine, Qatar University. ), Prof. Abdel Badie Abu Samra (Hamad medical corporation), and Dr. Luis Furuya Kanamori (Hamad medical corporation) co-supervised Ms. Othman's Ph.D. project (Queensland university, Australia).

Students at Qatar University Health PhD program receive a comprehensive foundation in biological, clinical, and pharmacy-related multidisciplinary study, as well as intense training in advanced medical sciences, research philosophy, and modern procedures. The program is four years long, holding 60 credit hours. This is in line with a number of highly regarded regional and worldwide institutions' PhD programs. Formal lectures, group projects, research presentations, journal clubs, and authoring review articles are all part of the curriculum, which aims to improve students' critical thinking, rigorous scientific writing, and problem-solving skills through research.

Othman expressed her gratitude for receiving a prestigious academic degree and for becoming the first Qatari to graduate from Qatar University's doctoral program in medical sciences and the first to graduate from the College of Medicine's doctoral program.

She claimed to dedicate her success to the Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Father Amir H H Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, and H H Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser Al-Misnad, who all worked hard to ensure that the University offered the greatest and highest academic degrees. Otherwise, she would not have been able to complete her academic career while being a mother of six children.

The importance of building a solid DSME intervention program was highlighted in this project. This could lead to a higher uptake of an effective intervention among PWDs, allowing them to maintain successful DSM and improve their quality of life.

Hopefully this is just the start of future accomplishments and success in the sector.
