The full moon of the month of Muharram for this year will be different from what one is regularly used to as it will appear much bigger and brighter in size.

Astronomers at the Qatar Calendar House (QCH) announced that the moon this year will appear more gigantic, at least 14% larger and 30% more luminous, due to its proximity to Earth.

The moon will be approximately 357,300km away from the centre of the earth, making it look bigger than usual.

Dr Bashir Marzouk, an astronomer at QCH, said Qatar’s residents can enjoy the phenomenon of the year’s first giant moon with the naked eye, starting from the evening of Tuesday, 14 Muharram 1445 AH, corresponding to August 1, and lasting until before sunrise on Wednesday.

While the time of moonrise over Qatar’s skies will be at 6.26 pm on Tuesday, the sun will rise on Wednesday at 5.01 am local time.
