Hamad Bin Khalifa University Press (HBKU Press) affirmed that its participation in Frankfurter Buchmesse in Germany helps Qatari publications reach a global audience and enter new markets through the sale of publishing and translation rights in multiple languages.
Bachar Chebaro, Executive Director of HBKU Press, told Qatar News Agency (QNA) that the fair serves as an international platform for negotiating the purchase and sale of publishing and translation rights, noting that this is HBKU Press's fifth participation in the event.
Unlike traditional book fairs that focus on direct sales to the public, Frankfurter Buchmesse enables publishers to hold professional meetings and conclude agreements that facilitate the movement of books between different markets and cultures, he added.
Chebaro explained that HBKU Press's participation follows two parallel tracks. The first involves seeking new publications from Western publishers and negotiating for the rights to publish them and make them available to Qatari and Arab readers. The second focuses on showcasing works by Qatari authors and illustrators and marketing their rights to foreign publishing houses to reach readers in different languages.
Chebaro highlighted HBKU Press's success in selling the publishing rights to works by Qatari authors to entities in several countries, including Germany and Turkiye, enabling their publication in those countries' languages and expanding their reach beyond Arab markets.
The 78th edition of Frankfurter Buchmesse is taking place from 7 to 11 October, with approximately 4,000 exhibitors.
The edition's programme includes more than 3,800 events at the fairgrounds and across Frankfurt. It also dedicates extensive space to the trade in publishing and translation rights, while the Literary Agents & Scouts Centre (LitAg) hosts 319 agencies from 32 countries.
