His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani will head Qatar's delegation to the 76th session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly (UNGA).

The general debate of the 76th UNGA is set to take place at the UN headquarters in New York City from September 21 to 27, 2021.

HH the Amir will deliver a speech during the opening session of the general debate on Tuesday, September 21.

The UNGA is the main policy-making organ of the United Nations, serving as a platform for all Member States to convene and engage in multilateral discussions on wide-ranging international issues.

"The Assembly meets in regular sessions from September to December each year, and thereafter as required. It discusses specific issues through dedicated agenda items or sub-items, which lead to the adoption of resolutions," the UN website states.

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the UNGA has been "carrying out its work since 2020 via novel means to guarantee business continuity and mitigate the spread of the disease. Specific examples include the use of virtual platforms to conduct meetings and the adoption of e-voting through procedure for decision-making when an in-person meeting is not possible," the website adds.

However, in addition to the pandemic, other issues that require global action include racism, intolerance, inequality, climate change, poverty, hunger, armed conflict. The General Assembly is a critical opportunity for all to come together and devise solutions to address these challenges.

The 76th session of the UNGA officially got underway on September 14, 2021, as Abdulla Shahid of the Maldives, was formally elected for Presidency of the 76th session at the UN headquarters.

Opening the 76th session, the newly-sworn in president said there's been a near-universal 'collective anxiety' and hopelessness, not all of which is pandemic-related, but "the narrative must change," and the General Assembly "must play a part in this."

The present times call for hope above all, to demonstrate to the global population that “we are aware of their plight…are listening…and are willing to work together to overcome problems," he said.
