Residents of Qatar will have an opportunity to observe the Delta Aquariid meteor shower from Wednesday evening, July 29, until the early hours of Thursday morning.
Qatar Calendar House said the annual meteor shower reaches its peak around July 29 and 30 and may produce approximately 20 meteors per hour under ideal viewing conditions.
The best time to watch will be from midnight until dawn. Viewers should choose a dark location away from residential areas and other sources of light pollution and look towards the south-eastern horizon.
The meteor shower can be observed with the naked eye, without telescopes or other astronomical equipment. Those hoping to photograph the event can use a digital camera with a longer exposure time.
International meteor organisations note that the Southern Delta Aquariids are usually best viewed from southern latitudes. Observed rates north of the equator may be considerably lower than the ideal hourly rate. Visibility in 2026 is also expected to be significantly affected by bright moonlight, with the moon approximately 98 per cent full around the peak.
The shower takes its name from its radiant point near the star Delta Aquarii in the constellation Aquarius. Meteors occur when small particles left behind by comets enter Earth’s atmosphere and burn up, producing brief streaks of light across the sky.
