His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, who has been a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) since 2002, yesterday joined the virtual meeting of its 137th session.

The President of the International Olympic Committee, Dr Thomas Bach, presided over the meeting which saw the attendance of members of the Executive Office, members of the IOC, and presidents of international federations and national Olympic committees.

From Qatar, His Excellency the President of Qatar Olympic Committee, Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad al-Thani also took part in the meeting.

The session focused on advancing and supporting the Olympic movement, in addition to discussing other topics on the agenda.

The event also witnessed Dr Bach’s re-election as the IOC President for another term.

Speaking on the occasion, the IOC President highlighted the great work of the international federations that strived to hold more than 270 major sporting events, World Championships or World Cups, since September 2020.

Over 30,000 athletes took part in these events under strict health and safety protocols, with more than 200,000 tests carried out in this period.

“Not a single one of these events turned into a virus-spreader. So we have clear and obvious proof that very big international sports events with a large number of international participants can be organized while safeguarding the health of everyone,” he said.

Speaking about the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, the IOC President confirmed that the Japanese city is ‘the best prepared Olympic city ever,’ and at the moment it is certain that the Opening Ceremony will be held on July 23, 2021.
