HH The Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani attended the inauguration ceremony of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who was re-elected two weeks ago in a hard-fought election.
The inauguration ceremony, which was held in the Presidential Compound on Monday evening, was attended by a number of top officials and statesmen, reported Gulf Times.
Earlier, upon his arrival at the Esenboga International Airport, HH The Emir was welcomed by Turkey’s Minister of Youth and Sports Osman Askin Bak and Qatar’s Ambassador to Turkey Salem bin Mubarak Al Shafi along with members of the Qatari embassy in Ankara.
Erdogan hailed the beginning of a new chapter in the country’s history in his inauguration address, while promising improvements in every area.
“In the new era, Turkey will improve in every field, including democracy, fundamental rights, freedoms, economy and large investments,” Erdogan was quoted as saying by Qatar Tribune.
The inauguration concluded the transition from a parliamentary system to an executive presidency, in line with the constitutional changes approved in a referendum in April, 2017.
“Turkey is leaving behind a system which cost the country politically, socially and economically,” Erdogan said.
Under the new system, Erdogan leads the state’s executive branch and has the right to appoint and dismiss vice-presidents, a newly introduced position, as well as ministers, high-level officials and senior judges without parliamentary approval.
