As summer is in full swing, outdoor and indoor heat exposure can be dangerous in Qatar. Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) advises on reducing children for heat-related illness.
Here are some health tips to follow:
1. Supervise children
When they are playing outdoors, it is very important to supervise children. If they show any signs of heat-related illness, they can be identified immediately and addressed.
2. Heat and humidity forecast
It is advised to monitor local heat and humidity forecasts. It can be easily done by using any weather app on the phone. If there are heat warnings of extreme temperatures, > 32-330 C, and/or humidity, >50%, you can plan your day accordingly.
3. Unshaded play areas
It is advised to avoid play areas that are not shaded and play surfaces that absorb and reflect heat like asphalt, concrete, dark-colored, and reflective surfaces.
4. Regular breaks
Regular breaks, every 30 minutes, to take children into air-conditioned indoors or shaded spaces and to drink cool liquids, every 15 minutes.
Dry their sweat off, provide a cool towel wipe, and change clothes if necessary.
Use phone alarm with lively alarm sounds or songs and make it a game with the children, so they enjoy these breaks.
5. Time outdoor playtime
Time outdoor playtime before 10:00 am or after 4:00 pm to reduce dangerous heat exposure.
