Qatar has deep-rooted history with the traditional sailing boats known as dhows. It was in these boats that Qataris went out to se in search of pearls and fishes.

Even after the discovery of gas on its shores, Qatar has made it a point to continue its deep affection and love for dhows.

Eight years ago, Qatar launched an event which celebrated the history of the boats. It’s latest iteration, the eighth Traditional Dhow Festival, will be held at the Katara Cultural Village from November 20 to 24, reported Gulf Times.

The exhibition will see participation of dhows from nine countries in addition to the hosts Qatar.

The eighth edition of the festival is set to feature a variety of cultural events, maritime competitions, folkloric shows and fireworks displays, Ahmed Al Hitmi, director of beach management at Katara and director of the festival, was quoted as saying by Qatar Tribune.

Al Hitmi said the festival’s organising committee had opened registration for participation in maritime competitions and heritage shows.

There will be a total of eight competitions, for different age groups, organised at the festival.

The festival will also see a massive display of traditional sailing vessels and dhows, with a number of services being on offer to visitors.

A maritime crafts market will be organised for participating nations to display their traditional maritime craftsmanship.

The festival will also feature demonstrations of pearl extracting from oyster and others as well as games and workshops for children.
