Qatar Living recently visited Millennium Medical Centre (MMC) and had the opportunity to speak with Dr Tarek Tawfiq, an internal medicine physician and an endocrinologist to learn more about his areas of expertise and the kinds of treatments he provides.
MMC first opened its doors in Qatar in 2017. The Centre’s specialist doctors are known to give patients the very best results in the most stress-free of environments.
What do internal medicine physicians and endocrinologists do?
Internal medicine physicians specialize in preventing, diagnosing and treating diseases. They are also responsible for supporting overall health.
An endocrinologist is an internal medicine physician further trained to focus on specific medical issues such as osteoporosis.
What can MMC’s Dr Tarek offer me?
Dr Tarek has 34 years of experience and is a keen problem-solver. This is just one reason why this doctor has excellent results in several areas of both internal medicine and endocrinology.
With 13 years of experience in Qatar, Dr Tarek sees patients from every nationality. He prides himself on ensuring that he places the individual patient as the central focus of his attention.
It is important to this humble, friendly doctor that patients are made to feel comfortable enough to share symptoms openly with him.
Dr Tariq is devoted to seeing his patients heal. He is also a guardian of health and expresses joy in seeing his patients healthy and strong.
What particular areas of expertise in internal medicine and endocrinology does Dr Tarek offer specifically at MMC?
There are many areas of expertise which Dr Tariq treats in both internal medicine and endocrinology. Qatar Living spotlights two such areas.
1A- Overweight Treatment
Dr Tarek speaks openly that 95 percent of all overweight and even obesity cases are as a result of behavioural disorders, such as poor diet. Only 5% of cases are about genetics and hormonal imbalances.
Nonetheless, for each of his new patients seeking obesity treatment, he is sure to obtain their full profile and medical history.
Dr Tarek then tests for genetic and endocrinal factors. Only if Dr Tarek expertly rules these factors out, does he compile a treatment plan to correct behavioural disorders, tailored to a specific profile.
This is done in cooperation with MMC’s dieticians and nutritionists
Dr Tariq is clear that whether a patient is obese or overweight, as long as genetic and hormonal factors are ruled out, the body will respond to diet and exercise.
1B- Obesity treatment
Should genetic or hormonal factors be identified as a cause for obesity however, Dr Tariq then makes recommendations for gastric bypass surgery.
He is sure to point out that gastric bypass surgery involves many risks and can even be life-threatening. This is not a quick-fix or an easy decision to make. It is important to Dr Tariq that patients are fully informed.
Based on a patient’s profile, Dr Tarek may still place the gastric bypass candidate on a strict diet and exercise regime beforehand. This is to ensure every care is taken to increase chances of success.
1C- Cosmetic Spot Treatment
Cosmetic surgery is also a treatment option with Dr Tarek.
This applies to patients who tell Dr Tarek about specific areas of their body, non-responsive to diet and exercise.
Dr Tarek signals that these types of patients are otherwise in proportionate shape and with an overall healthy profile.
2- Endocrine disease treatment
In the Gulf Region, Dr Tarek sees many cases of ‘stunted growth’ in children.
In these cases, Dr Tarek conducts the relevant hormonal and chemical imbalance tests for accurate diagnosis, quickly.
He then prescribes the relevant treatment regime to correct the imbalance. Dr Tarek is sure to monitor progress and document results.
The humble doctor beamed with joy when mentioning the success this treatment has had in the lives of children. It is truly life-altering.
Qatar Living was inspired by Dr Tariq’s responsible attitude towards his patient’s overall health.
Whilst Dr Tariq is correct to pride himself in being a problem-solver, Qatar Living was most reassured that he is also the kind of doctor who does not believe in short-cuts to good health.
