The Ministry of Municipality has announced the temporary closure of a supermarket in Al Rayyan after inspectors found food that was unfit for human consumption, in violation of Qatar's food safety regulations.

According to the ministry, Al Rayyan Municipality ordered the supermarket to close for seven days under Law No. 8 of 1990, as amended by Law No. 4 of 2014, which regulates food control for human consumption. The business owner is also responsible for covering all expenses related to the closure.

The ministry explained that food is considered spoiled or unfit for consumption if it, its packaging, or containers contain contaminants such as larvae, worms, insects, waste, or animal byproducts.

Authorities noted that the duration of a closure depends on the type and severity of the violation and is determined by the competent municipal director. Under the law, a closure may not exceed 60 days at a time, although repeated violations can result in additional closures.

The ministry also stressed that businesses are prohibited from reopening, carrying out commercial activities, or even conducting maintenance work during the closure period. Violating a closure order may lead to criminal liability.

To promote transparency and consumer awareness, the Ministry of Municipality maintains a publicly accessible list of food establishments that have been closed for violating food safety regulations on its official website.
