Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi denied on Monday that any technical-level negotiations with the United States would be held in Qatar this week, saying consultations would instead take place with Qatari officials.

The comments came after Mehdi Fazaeli, a member of the Iranian supreme leader’s office, said talks that had been scheduled with the US on Sunday were cancelled by Iranian negotiators.

According to Fazaeli, the cancellation followed fundamental disagreements over the Strait of Hormuz and other issues.

The latest developments come amid continued tensions between Tehran and Washington, following reciprocal US-Iranian attacks and Iran’s signalling that it is in no rush to return to direct talks.

The situation suggests that any future discussions between Iran and the US may focus on implementing what has already been agreed, particularly regarding the Strait of Hormuz, the vital maritime route that Iran has used as a major point of leverage during the crisis.
