Al Rayyan Municipality has closed down the section of a leading hypermarket on Salwa Road selling frozen chicken unfit for human consumption, reported The Peninsula earlier today.

The frozen chicken sections at the branches of the outlet in Al Sudan, Azeeziya, Al Ghanim and Al Murra have also been shut, according to an announcement on the website of the Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning. The closure is for 10 days.

The closure follows an intensified inspection campaign being carried out by the civic ministry and the Ministry of Economy and Commerce, resulting in the closure of several outlets across the city.

Four restaurants have been ordered shut in Doha for selling expired food and not following proper hygiene while preparing food. The closures were ordered by Mohammed Ahmed Al Sayed, Director, Doha Municipality.

Three outlets were closed for seven to 15 days and these included a grocery shop in Najma, a restaurant in Umm Ghuwailina, and a traditional kitchen in Old Al Ghanim.

Authorities also closed down part of a bakery belonging to one of the hotels in Old Salata for 45 days.

Al Daain Municipality imposed fines on violating shops totalling QR10,500.

Authorities are publishing the names of closed food outlets on the Ministry of Economy and Commerce website and have urged the public to always look out for closed outlets in their neighbourhoods and report violations they find in the outlets they visit.

Inspectors from the Ministry of Economy and Commerce registered 60 cases last month for violations of the consumer protection law.

They included failure to display the prices and product specifications in a prominent way, selling at prices higher than the declared prices, selling expired products, failure to display products specifications in Arabic, providing false information to consumers, refusal to replace damaged goods or refund the money, among others, the ministry said yesterday.

In a related incident, about 66 violations were registered against shops and vehicles for occupying sidewalks or misusing public parking in Doha.

The inspection campaign was conducted by the monitoring section at Doha Municipality and the Traffic Department and violations were recorded in Al Hitmi, Old Ghanim and Old Airport main road and commercial street, reported a local Arabic daily.

Ali Nasser Al Hajri, Head, Monitoring Section, said the campaign targeted shops occupying sidewalks and car showrooms encroaching upon public parking spaces.

He said the campaign has been extended to other areas in Doha where similar violations are common.
