National Museum of Qatar officially opens to public today

A stunning attraction that not only beautifies Qatar’s landscape but also offers a site infused with the country’s rich cultural heritage, the National Museum of Qatar in its new building is all set for its official launch this evening.

His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani patronized the official opening ceremony last night and shared his thoughts on the momentous occasion, reported Qatar Tribune.

HH the Amir said in a tweet on Tuesday, “Our national museum is our legacy and history. Tomorrow we are reopening it.”

The opening ceremony gathered senior leaders from friendly countries, in addition to a number of distinguished political, cultural, and media personalities as well as several artists.

Top management from many international companies, museum directors, academics, film directors, celebrities and individuals connected to the field of museums and heritage from across the globe joined the historic event, according to The Peninsula.

The museum, which will officially open to public today, offers a highly interactive and immersive experience to visitors, organized in three “chapters” — Beginnings, Life in Qatar, and Building the Nation — presented in 11 galleries.

Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning French architect, Jean Nouvel, who is in Qatar for the opening ceremony, the $434 million building is a sprawling array of curved discs, cantilevered angles and surprising intersections, and was inspired by "desert rose" crystal clusters which form in the Qatari desert, reported CNN.

The museum’s iconic entrance includes 114 fountain sculptures in a 900-metre long lagoon and its multi-curved roof resembles a giant jigsaw puzzle. It is made up of 76,000 panels in 3,600 different shapes and sizes.

Exhibition galleries and public spaces in the museum include a multitude of personal histories and interpretations of Qatari identity, among which are pieces by some of the country’s brightest artistic talents, reported Gulf Times.

There are several facilities to explore for young ones and adults in the museum’s family spaces, parks, restaurants and cafes, and playgrounds. A range of guided tours for children and adults are also a key attraction of the spectacular new museum.

On Tuesday, His Highness the Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani and Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser toured the National Museum of Qatar, accompanied by Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad Al Thani, Chairperson of Qatar Museums.

HH the Father Amir donated precious items of great heritage value to the National Museum of Qatar, that belong to The Founder Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed bin Thani.

NMoQ will be open to visitors Saturdays to Thursdays 9 am to 7 pm and Fridays 1.30 pm to 7 pm. Tickets will be available at the front desk with special prices for Culture Pass members.
