Scientists at Russia's Sechenov Medical University have developed an effective blood test that helps in the early detection of breast cancer with high sensitivity.
According to the experts at the university, 135 women participated in the study, 55 of whom were diagnosed with breast cancer, after measuring the concentrations of five proteins in the blood: osteopontin, soluble VEGFR2, neurobilin-1, suPAR, and tinacin-C, which are proteins associated with inflammation, the formation of new blood vessels, and the growth of tumors.
Tests showed the system's ability to detect 96.4 percent of cases, with false positives recorded in some healthy women.
The osteopontin protein has emerged as the most important marker, due to its association with inflammation and the spread of cancer cells, and scientists are studying the possibility of targeting it to develop new anti-cancer drugs.
The researchers believe that the test may help in the future identify women who need additional tests to detect the disease, stressing that this method has been tested on a small sample of people, so it cannot currently replace mammograms.
