Debunking rumors on social media regarding extremely high temperatures in days to come, with speculated temperatures to reach 80 C, Director of Qatar’s Meteorology Department at the Civil Aviation Authority (CIA), Abdulla Al Mannai has rubbished such predictions and urged the public to only trust official sources.

Al Mannai told Qatar News Agency that the current temperatures were at the "natural level" and had not seen any unprecedented increase.

The temperatures recorded at present are similar to the regular levels seen in summer months in Qatar, he said.

There has been no indication of a severe rise in temperatures in the coming period, he added.

Al Mannai further said that the temperature levels recorded so far this month have not exceeded those seen in June 2018. This month the highest temperature registered by the department was 48.2C.

The world in general has been experiencing rising temperatures, he said.

In terms of relying on temperature sensors embedded within cars, Al Mannai said these sensors are affected by different factors, one of which is its location which is too close to the engine.

Such sensors give a higher temperature reading as compared to official temperatures announced by the dept.

Another factor for this phenomenon may be the senor’s exposure to the car exhaust, Al Mannai explained.

Additionally, the Met dept director urged the public to monitor official sources for temperature checks and weather updates.

He recommended visiting the department's official website or following its verified accounts on various social media platforms.

Al Mannai also advised the public to avoid exposure to sunlight as much as possible. Other tips included wearing comfortable clothes with bright colors, staying hydrated and avoiding outdoor activities. 

He also called on workers to follow the guidelines issued by the designated authorities on the matter.

People should be extra careful during summer and never leave children alone in the car, he said, asking individuals to always check no one is inside the vehicle before closing it.
