As the weather gets balmier, now may be a good time to set up that balcony —or roof space, however small —in style. Here at Qatar Living we know that the little things count too, so we've put together a few tips to help create an atmosphere of comfort, leisure and relaxation for when you're lounging on your terrace.
10. The generic but delightful patio swing
No, you probably can't make this at home, but investing in one of these loungey patio swings is worth it if you want to spend some time outside with a book or a show. Good for a quick doze!
9. Soften things with a rug
Although Doha is known for its dust, a small rug made of easy-to clean or wipeable material is just the thing to bring a new tone and break up any lacklustre patterns on your balcony.
8. Go for furniture if you have the room
Having a place to sit and a surface to put your glass, snacks and cards on is important if you're hanging with friends and family and plan to spend a significant amount of time out.
7. Create some shade
With the UV index being what it is in the Gulf, creating the option of shade is always a must. Whether it's with a folding umbrella, canvas or tarpaulin, there's always a way to keep the sun at bay.
6. Avoid the pigeon problem
Something as simple as a plastic owl can scare the splatterers away. Not that we hate pigeons, but they do make a mess!
5. Set up a windbreaker
This only works if you secure it properly. With Qatar being as windy as it is, creating a windbreaker, whether it's made of wood or cloth, is a good idea if you don't want laundry, furniture or your cat flying around, especially if your balcony isn't sheltered.
4. Don't be afraid to decorate
Even a simple flower pot or bowl can be enough to brighten things up. You can aslo try painting your standard plastic patio chairs to add colour.
3. Light up the night
Fairy lights aren't just for big events. Try lining your balcony with these to lend a soft, festive glow to your evenings. Lanterns and candles are another great way to liven up even the dryest of spaces
2. Make it private
Whether or not you're an introvert, sometimes it's nice to have your own private space to enjoy the outdoors. Installing a patterned screen is a way to create a space that is private, but still attractive.
1. Go green
Plants not only make a space look beautiful, they can actually clean up the air around them. Look for heat-resistent, hardy plants that will do well in the harsher weather. Cacti are always a good option too. Have a look here for foliage options that clear the air of pollutants and make good house plants.
