Those who are interested in astronomy should look to the skies tonight as you are likely to be treated to a wondrous sight — the Perseid Meteor Showers.

The meteor showers, which is usually active every year from July 23 until August 24, will illuminate Qatar’s sky the brightest from today evening until Monday dawn, reported Gulf Times.

“Residents of the Northern Hemisphere including Qatar will have a good chance to observe the Perseid meteor shower,” said Qatar Calendar House’s astronomy expert Dr Beshir Marzouk.

The showers, which can be seen with the naked eye, will fall at an average of 100 meteors per hour, Dr Marzouk was quoted as saying by The Peninsula.

“Residents in Qatar and countries in Northern Hemisphere won’t require an astronomical instrument to witness Perseid meteor showers. It can be seen with the naked eye, provided you’re in a place without light and environment pollutions,”  said Dr Marzouk.

“One should look to the northeast direction of the sky to be able to see the meteor showers. People can also take nice photographs of Perseid meteor shower by using digital cameras. But they must increase the camera’s exposure time in order to get the best visuals,” he told Qatar Tribune.

Perseid meteor showers are caused by debris from the ‘Swift-Tuttle Comet.’ Every year, Earth passes through dust and debris it leaves behind in the last week of July till mid-August.

Normally, the best time for one to observe the Perseid meteor shower is from midnight until the early hours of the dawn.
