African expatriates have been a huge part of Qatar’s social fabric. Be it any sporting event or cultural extravaganza, they come in great numbers and bring with them a unique African identity.
Just the other day, South African singing duo Mafikizolo — consisting of Theo Kgosinkwe and Nhlanhla Nciza — performed in Doha and it was a huge hit.
This will encourage African countries to bring in more performers into Qatar in the future, according to South African ambassador Faizel Moosa.
“We’re busy discussing about the ‘African week’ where we’ll expose the communities here to African culture, cuisine and history, among others,” the envoy was quoted as saying by Gulf Times.
Moosa said that the African diplomatic community, consisting of 23 African ambassadors to Qatar, were holding talks about hosting the African Week in the country. The event is expected to be held in the last quarter of 2018, reported Qatar Tribune.
The Embassy of South Africa is also planning a cultural exchange activity with the Katara Cultural Village.
“This will probably take place in the first quarter of 2019. There’ll be much more exchanges between Qatar and South Africa in terms of culture, tourism and education,” he said.
“We think we need to begin bringing more African music to Qatar because Qatar is known as a melting pot of nations and cultures. There’re a lot of Africans from Kenya, Nigeria, and Ethiopia working and living in Qatar,” he said.
