Qatar has always prided itself as a hot destination for sports lovers and knowledge seekers.

With several branches of international universities operating on its shores, the country has swiftly become a knowledge hub in the region.

Qatar recently took another step towards becoming a knowledge-based economy when Prime Minister and Interior Minister HE Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani inaugurated the Qatar School of Science and Technology for Boys in the Umm Al Seneem area.

Qatar’s Minister of Education and Higher Education HE Dr Mohamed Abdulwahed Ali Al Hammadi and other senior officials took part in the opening ceremony, reported Gulf Times.

A documentary film about the school, its various stages of development and goals were screened during the event.

Officials gave a detailed tour of the school to Sheikh Abdullah, explaining various facets of its working and the school’s role in providing high-quality education based on the integration of scientific subjects.

The Qatar School of Science and Technology is a specialised secondary school that will cater to students from grades 9 to 12. It has adopted an integrated educational approach based on the teaching of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in an integrated manner, reported The Peninsula.

This approach, universally known as STEM Education, focuses on the study of the four subjects in methodological frameworks, without the need to teach them separately.

Students were admitted for the first time at the start of this academic year, and 60 Qatari students have so far joined the school on Grade 9.

Al Hammadi said the school provided students with a unique educational experience through its laboratories and teaching staff, reported Qatar Tribune.

The school aims to build a generation of scientists, researchers and inventors to provide the country with rare scientific disciplines and scholarly outputs that possess the skills for a knowledge-based economy.
