Qatar Airways will no longer be operating flights from five African countries: Angola, Mozambique, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

The decision comes as governments across the world race to restrict travelers from these countries following the emergence of Omicron, a new COVID-19 variant, in South Africa.

Omicron has been classified as 'highly transmissible' and a 'variant of concern,' by the World Health Organization (WHO).

With immediate effect, #QatarAirways will no longer be operating flights from five South African countries – Angola, Mozambique, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe –
due to the COVID-19 Omicron variant. We continue to review the situation as information is available from the WHO.

On its website, Qatar Airways said, it "will continue to accept passengers for travel into these countries in-line with current restrictions."

The airline further said, "passengers who are booked on Qatar Airways flights from five destinations,  Luanda (LAD), Angola; Maputo (MPM), Mozambique; Johannesburg (JNB), Capetown (CPT), Durban (DUR), South Africa; Lusaka (LUN), Zambia; and Harare (HRE), Zimbabwe, will not be accepted for travel until further notice."

These restrictions will remain in place until further guidance from the World Health Organization (WHO), Qatar Airways said, adding that it will continue to review the situation on a daily basis and will update the website when new information is available.
