Ever since June 5, 2017, Qatar has been undergoing an illegal siege by four neighbouring countries.

Several attempts at talks to solve the crisis have not been successful and the biggest casualties have been families in Qatar and the siege nations, who were torn apart.

Qatar has once again called for the siege nations to come to the negotiation table and end the human rights violations which are being committed in the name of the siege, reported Gulf Times.

The request was delivered by Qatar’s permanent representative to the United Nations Office Ambassador Ali Khalfan Al Mansouri, during the general debate on the oral update by the High Commissioner for Human Rights under Item (2) of the Human Rights Council’s 39th session.

“We concur with the High Commissioner’s statement that political differences may divide some of the countries, but upholding human rights is in the interest of every State. In this context, we call on siege countries to sit at the negotiating table to end the human rights violations committed in the context of the Gulf crisis, which has affected a large number of individuals and families,” Al Mansouri said.

Al Mansouri voiced Qatar’s appreciation to the High Commissioner and expressed hope that the High Commissioner would address the human rights violations on Qatar in her address.

He reaffirmed Qatar’s commitment to continuing to cooperate with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and the High Commissioner to carry out the mandate of the Office in the promotion and protection of human rights all over the world, reported Qatar Tribune.

He also urged the OHCHR and the Council’s relevant mechanisms to take all feasible measures to put an end to these violations, especially as they continue to this day.
