Qatar yesterday joined the United Nations Convention on International Settlement Agreements Resulting from Mediation, known as the Singapore Convention on Mediation.
The U.N. conventions are often named after the country or city where they are signed.
Qatar was among the 46 UN member states, including the US and China, to sign the agreement, which aims to facilitate and stabilize cross-border trade relationships in addition to consolidate the international dispute resolution framework.

On the occasion, His Excellency the Minister of Justice and Acting Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs Dr Issa bin Saad Al Jafali Al Nuaimi signed the instrument of accession to the convention.
HE the Minister of Justice is heading Qatar’s delegation to the high-level conference on mediation and international dispute resolution currently underway in Singapore.
With this accession, Qatar is at the forefront of the signatories to this model convention that focuses on facilitating litigation procedures and providing better, quicker means of resolving disputes.
During the signing ceremony, which witnessed the presence of representatives from a number of countries of the world, HE the Minister of Justice affirmed that Qatar's signing of this important agreement comes within the directives of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani to establish a national legislative and legal system to keep pace with rapid global developments.
HE Al Jafali also pointed out that Qatar's joining of this agreement reflects the nation’s keenness to support the international system for security, peace and social justice.
The government of Qatar continues to modernize its legal system under a deliberate plan in line with the Qatar National Vision 2030, HE the Minister stressed.
The Qatari delegation will highlight the country's legal experience and explore areas of cooperation and exchange of experience in bilateral meetings with several other friendly countries.
The Qatari-Singaporean Joint Committee was held on Tuesday in Singapore as part of the implementation of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the two countries for co-operation in the legal field.
HE Dr Issa bin Saad Al Jafali Al Nuaimi led the Qatari side, while Minister of Home Affairs and Law K Shanmugam headed the Singaporean side.
The meeting underlined means of enhancing cooperation in all legal fields and exchanging expertise in training, rehabilitation, and real estate registration.
