Qatar Museums has launched an array of events and activities catering to a wide array of interests and artistic passions, to be hosted across its cultural institutions throughout August.

Citizens and residents can look forward to a range of culturally enriching programmes designed to promote creativity and take art beyond four walls.

Museum of Islamic Art (MIA)

Observational Studies with a Twist- Introduction to Abstract Art

10, 17, 24 August from 4 pm – 5.30 pm

This fun, the fast-paced workshop will teach children aged 8 to 11 how to draw and paint abstract art. Each session consists of a different object/set up and will draw inspiration from famous abstract artists such as Picasso.

Epic Patterns of Central Asia with Laurelie Rae

14, 21 and 28 August and 4 Sep from 5 pm – 7 pm

This online programme will focus on the patterns, colors, and textures from Central Asia in MIA's Collection, exploring the history of the Timurid dynasty and retracing their steps through the patterns they have left behind.

In the first workshop, students will analyze and create the Rumi motif compositions found in a Timurid arch. Students will learn about the symbolic and practical uses of muqarnas and some of their surface patterns in the second workshop.

During the third workshop, students will create their own plate composition using motifs. In the final workshop, students will learn how to create the geometry of Timurid carved tiles.

Wood Workshop

17 August, 10 am – 11.30 am

Children aged 8 to 11 are invited to learn about the different properties of wood, see examples from the MIA collection, and then make their very own wooden souvenir.

Geometry for adults

23 August from 4 pm – 7 pm

In this workshop, participants will be introduced to the concept of geometry in Islamic art, inspired by MIA’s collection. Participants will learn the basics of geometry and how to create a pattern using a net of interlocking circles made with a compass and a ruler.

Story Time: Tuttle the Turtle

Saturday, 21 August from 4 pm to - 6 pm at the Mohammed Jassim Al Khulaifi Library

The children’s storybook “Tuttle the Turtle”, written and illustrated by Luciana Ceccatto Farah, tells the story of a little turtle and the dangers of marine waste to these precious creatures.

Young readers will have fun reading this story and engaging in a variety of activities to learn about the importance of preserving Qatar’s natural environment.

Dugongs’ Tales Storytelling and Art Workshop

Saturday, 7 August from 4 pm – 6 pm

In this session, children will enjoy listening to different stories about dugongs and the threats that they face to encourage them to take an active role in protecting this animal.

A Story of Pearl Divers

2 and 9 August (English)

4 and 11 August (Arabic)

12 pm – 1 pm

In this virtual tour, participants will embark on a special journey about pearls, starting with the search at the depths of the sea and ending with the trade, which had a great impact on the lives of the people of Qatar.

10 -15 October from 5 pm – 6 pm at the Education Room, Fire Station

Qatar Museums invites teachers in Qatar to take part in this training and networking opportunity.
