Education has always remained one of the top priorities for Qatar. In addition to creating new avenues for education for those in the country, Qatar has also worked hard to support the education of needy, underprivileged children across the globe.

Earlier this year, Qatar's Government Communications (GCO) affirmed that "Qatar puts education first, believing it is the foundation of global peace, stability, and opportunity."

The GCO highlighted that Qatar's investment in education has led to "bringing positive change to millions of lives around the world."

Building on its earlier efforts in this area, Qatar has now pledged to fund educational programs for refugee students in Malaysia.

The aim of the support is to help the students overcome challenges in accessing education as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a joint statement released by Qatar and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), it was confirmed that the contribution from Qatar will aid in supporting digital infrastructure to facilitate education for upper primary and secondary students in refugee learning centers under UNHCR.

As many as 1,500 refugee children and youth of different ethnicities in addition to 200 teachers in 69 of the UNHCR centers will benefit from the Qatari support.

Some 1,500 tablets and 200 pro tablets with accessories will be provided to the learning centers by UNHCR, via its education NGO partner, Jaringan Rohingya Education Center (JREC).

His Excellency the Ambassador of Qatar to Malaysia Fahad bin Mohammed Kafoud commented, “The Government of the State of Qatar via Qatar Charity is committed to supporting much-needed and critical intervention in the area of education during the severe COVID-19 pandemic.”

“This will ensure that refugee students at UNHCR learning centers continue to have access to education during school closures,” he added.

Expressing his gratitude to Qatar for the support, UNHCR Representative Thomas Albrecht said, providing connectivity and online learning tools such as tablets, will enable students to access online learning materials and enable teachers to access tools to provide lessons, from home.

Through out the COVID-19 pandemic, Qatar has stressed the need for global solidarity to overcome the challenge, in particular to address its socio-economic impacts.
