Qatar is set to revive the long-awaited Sharq Crossing project, a $2bn mega-infrastructure venture that will reshape Doha’s entire transport network.

The ambitious plan is set to connect Hamad International Airport, West Bay, Katara Cultural District, and Lusail via three architecturally striking bridges and underwater tunnels, stretching a total of 12 km.

First announced in 2013 and designed by Santiago Calatrava, the project has faced repeated delays due to budget concerns, changes in scope, and shifting government priorities. Work was put on hold ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, but rising traffic challenges and renewed government support have brought Sharq Crossing back on the agenda.

Ashghal, Qatar’s Public Works Authority, awarded fresh contracts in August 2025 for updated needs assessment and concept work. The crossing is engineered to handle 6,000 vehicles per hour and promises to ease congestion across key Doha districts, setting a new benchmark for infrastructure in the region.

While no completion date has yet to be announced, Sharq Crossing is now positioned as a flagship project in Qatar’s ongoing urban growth strategy and its National Vision 2030.

As per Qatar’s Al Sharq newspaper, Qatar’s project markets recorded a 3.8% growth, equivalent to $8.5bn, supported by the revitalization of the Sharq Crossing project.
