Qatar’s list of achievements continues to expand with top honors.
In the latest such accomplishment, the country’s candidate Her Excellency Dr Sheikha Abdulla Al-Misnad has been elected as a member of the United Nations’ (UN) Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) for the term 2020-2023.
CERD is a UN body of independent experts that monitors the implementation of the Convention by its State Parties.
The Committee is composed of 18 experts who are recognized as individuals with high moral standing and fairness.
Members of the committee are elected for a four-year term with elections taking place every two years to elect nine of the 18 members.
Dr Al-Misnad secured a spot on the UN committee after receiving an outstanding 132 votes out of a group of 180 votes from State Parties to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination.

The appointment of Dr Al-Misnad as a CERD member signifies her tireless efforts in advancing education and human rights principles in the field of education and research.
Her work as a leading Qatari educator has been recognized in the many prestigious positions she has held in teaching, research, and administration over the last three decades.
One of the most influential women in the country, Dr Al-Misnad became the first Qatari female to hold the presidency of Qatar University in 2003.
Prior to that, she had assumed the positions of Vice President for Research and Community Development at QU from 2000-2003, and Head of Department of Foundations of Education from 1992-1995. Dr Al-Misnad has also been a member of the University Council between 1998-2004 and 1986-1989.
Her appointment to the UN body reflects the faith of the international community in Qatar for the role it plays in protecting and promoting human rights.
With this honor, Qatar joins China, Jamaica, Mauritania, Greece, South Africa, Peru, Germany and Senegal whose candidates have made it to the newly-elected UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
