Diabetes is one of the most prominent health challenges globally and locally. Qatar has established several initiatives and programs to help combat the disease in terms of its prevention and better management.
The country joins in global efforts to mark World Diabetes Day, which is observed on November 14 every year.
Qatar's Ministry of Public Health (MoPH), jointly with Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC), Sidra Medicine and Qatar Diabetes Association (QDA), organizes a host of activities to raise awareness about the disease.

To mark the day, MoPH, HMC, and the PHCC will participate in the "Diabetes March" organized by QDA under the theme "Family and Diabetes," at the Oxygen Park in Education City to be held tomorrow, November 15.
In the afternoon and until 5 pm, it will include free consultations for the public, managed by professional diabetes counselors. Educational materials about diabetes will also be distributed among the public.
The event aims to raise awareness about diabetes prevention for people at risk and promote a healthy lifestyle for people with diabetes.

The prevalence rate of diabetes in Qatar is 17 percent in adults, which calls for effective steps to combat this disease at the preventive and curative level.
Through the efforts of the Ministry of Public Health and its partners, several important achievements have been made under the Qatar National Diabetes Strategy 2016-2022.
The most significant of these is the implementation of guidelines for prevention and treatment and the identification of clinical pathways through the publication of six national clinical guidelines for diabetes care and preparation of a training plan for all health workers on diabetes.
This has benefitted about 20,000 healthcare professionals and covers risk factors for cardiovascular disease within the national diabetes strategy as well as the preparation of a national research plan for diabetes.
Qatar also initiated an awareness campaign to educate the community about diabetes and its risk factors.
The four-phase campaign highlights the need for early detection of diabetes and the importance of avoiding diabetes through healthy lifestyles, including nutrition, physical activity, and awareness.
The campaign included conducting a questionnaire to assess the level of awareness of those living with diabetes patients, patients, health care providers, and media, empowering patients to manage their health, conducting workshops for type 2 diabetes for self-education and training, and launching the diabetes website.
